Medieval Clothing Conversion Wishlist(s)
Feb. 1st, 2013 08:55 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
So, aside from my main stickypost, I have a Hair To-Do List, a Pregmorph Reference List, and a Hats and Headwear Resource/Wishlist. This post is going to be MOSTLY a wishlist, but secondarily a resource post, partlyy because I want to kind of streamline my main wishlist. If I put all my clothing conversion wishes in there, I'd be... Well, I'd have a very long and untidy wishlist.
Age Conversions
The thing about clothing patterns in the Middle Ages is that they were very, very similar for everybody. A shirt was essentially a shift, cut shorter, a robe and a gown could be the same garment depending on the sex of the wearer, children wore simplified versions of adult clothing, and everybody wore hats. If you were still growing, your clothing was made so that you could grow into it, because it was expected to last for years-- or there was no point in wasting the time it would take to make it by hand.
Since I'm actually trying to streamline how many meshes I have in my game, this is going to turn into a list of 'basic' Medieval meshes that could stand to be shifted to different ages. The meshes I personally desperately need will be marked with a *star*-- or a whole string of stars, if I'd be willing to give my eyeteeth or firstborn for the conversion.
To BU
Pick a baby gown, any baby gown, and I want Cynnix's coif added to it. Included in the zip are meshes by Bloom, Tenshii Akari, Chris Hatch, I think TheRaven... I'll figure out the gender-separated stuff myself, but I want cute little caps on my babies sometimes.
Download Mesh under 'Decently Covered' or 'I Got Better.' Beth provides and I got to work! More outfits soon, and blessings on the head of Chris Hatch for making non-default baby clothes a possibility.

Custom Body Shapes
I have two problems with using custom body shapes: one, I can never find enough Medieval clothing meshes to make me happy, and two, when you find a great female shape, there's almost never a male counterpart to go with it. I don't hold with pairing RenGal with Bodybuilders or custom female shapes with default Maxis men. Really, there are only three custom bodyshapes I want in my game, and they hearken back to the old Sims 1 days of Fat, Fit, and Skn.
For slenderness, gender-ambiguity, and women dressing as men to run away, run away and join the army, run away and go for a sailor, et cetera, I want Aquilegia's Androgyny in my game.
For strength, for knights and blacksmiths and... yep, also women who run away to pursue masculine pursuits, or who just help their fathers around the forge, I want a combination of Jaccirocker's Runner for men and Marvine's Athletic Girl for women. (A showerproof skintone combo was in the works, but Jacci is having some medical problems. I don't mind waiting for her.)
For well-fed lords, healthy ladies, stout bakers, busty wenches, and the like, the body shape I want doesn't exist yet. Basically I want something one step up from the Maxis fat morph, with sexyfeet, an even fatter fatmorph, and I don't mind if there isn't an elder shape if there's a child shape. For the purposes of this wishlist, I'm calling them the Hypothetical Heavyweights. (For a female shape, either Dr. Pixel's Well-Rounded Sim or Cynnix's Warlokk RenGal V2 would work-- I'd even use both, if both had male counterparts.)
I was going to make a very comprehensive list linking every mesh I want adapted to every age and shape, but that list had a LOT of repeats in it. As with age conversions, there are really only so many different meshes that need to be converted to make a bodyshape Medievally playable, so I'm going to start with the ones that would need to be converted to all the bodyshapes (for the applicable age and gender), then list the meshes that each specific age/gender/bodyshape combo calls for. If this is super-confusing please let me know and I'll figure out some other way to do it. It took me three days to figure this out, collect all the links, and code this and the pregmorph database/wishlist. (No Castaways Stories meshes are listed here, but if you wanted to do them for custom body shapes, you can get all the native meshes here and here and here. You would have my gratitude, but I'm already begging for sexyfeet and/or pregmorphs added to all those meshes, and I don't expect anyone else is as in love with Castaway Stories as I am.) I'll mark the meshes I most desperately want converted with a *star*. (As far as I'm concerned, a usable Medieval bodyshape clothing kit consists of the starred meshes under the All Shapes headers plus Tiggerypum's Alpha Tunic, which I already have for seven of the eleven shapes I'd want it converted to fit. ... Most people don't need the ninjas and plantsims. I love plantsims probably more than is good for me, and my clergysims (plus any orphaned or unwanted children handed over to the church) wear the ninja outfit, as it is perfectly egalitarian.)

Date: 2013-02-11 12:22 pm (UTC)http://oph3lia.dreamwidth.org/37367.html I smoothed it out a bit, there's some pics somewhere on my DW but I can't find them lol. I wish I knew how to add new vertices to a body mesh so I could smooth some areas out more but alas that and bone assignments are not things I can do.
Ah that sounds incredibly useful! Also as a resource for age converting/adding morphs if that hasn't been done too. Even if I am woefully slow at shape converting lol. Some of the older meshes have terrible recolours from what I recall :/ Ha Midsimmer Night's Dream - the fingers on that elven style mesh for AF are borked to buggery. Am tempted to fix them though, quite like the shape of the dress. Don't really use much else from that other than that male mesh you used for the heraldry.
I'll have a poke about on parsimonious and check. I think I'll leave them as replacements then. The AF mesh has a pregnancy morph (and so will the TF conversion I'm making of it).
Indeed, also... who wears heeled shoes to bed? lol. I hardly use it these days but I do love the recolour sherahbim made for it (then again I have all of her stuff pretty much, it might not be accurate but it's so pretty!) Also on the sherahbim front, I've nearly wrapped up a large-ish project I've been working on.

Date: 2013-02-11 05:56 pm (UTC)That's what Cynnix said! There are a few more meshes I'm waiting on (mostly CM conversions, but a few sleeve edits, too), but if there's a mesh bundle all in one place, then it's that much easier to make a set of themed meshes, right?
... I think the mesh I used for the heraldry came from the Dark Project set. Both sets are a little bit Hollywood Medieval, though, and the meshes and textures... Very sad. Those hats with the spidery feathers! The veils and wimples that aren't animated, or have insanity mapping! The 'leggings' that are actually slacks! There are concepts I'd use, if the execution were better.
I meant the Aligeth nightgown that looks bra-free-- it's pinky-red deal.
I love that recolor, too, which is why I slapped it on a Liana mashup mesh (sexyfeet added by Needlecream, morphs and the underside of the dress by Cynnix) and recolored it a bnch of times.
Oooh, large-ish project?

Date: 2013-02-16 12:28 pm (UTC)Yeah I don't have anything to use with the rengal (although I saw Cynnix was working on a brawny knight shape? I think that works pretty well with the ren). I was thinking of that athletic guy http://www.insimenator.org/index.php/board,160.0.html (I've always liked that shape, its not too muscular and I don't like muscly men so I don't use any of the bigger male shapes at all) would be a good pairing, but it needs massively updating and I'm not so good with male meshes. Heck I don't even know how to make showerproof stuff for the shape I'm working on lol.
Indeed... meshes for all!
Ahh, I get the 2 projects mixed up in my head. Yeah, they are... I think the textures are more bothersome for me, since meshes I can mangle somewhat (although tbh these days with all the great medieval content on plumbbob keep and whatnot don't really use them) but I suck at textures (unless I can cobble together bits of other peoples and even then, it's not really something I have a talent for). For some reason there seems to be a lack or rather has been a lack of good execution of medieval stuff. Quite a few good medieval creators about now though.
Hmm, not sure I only use Aligeth's medieval style nightgowns... maybe it's one of her others; had a look but not sure. I've seen plenty of modern nightwear clipping beds too though.
Yep, I have that... I stuck blockfeet on the mesh (which I need to remember to put up, since I think I'm not the last blockfoot mesh user... maybe? lol)
I've got 2 parts of it up now... it's basically Sherahbim's outfits (a considerable amount of them) on other ages (well mostly teen and elder). With a few new meshes where teen and elder versions were lacking and a bunch of texture linking. Also got some curious b recolours of some of them to post up afterwards and possible some texture mangling for a few new outfits (still seeing what works and what doesn't at the moment).
Also my brain has now decided it wants to do NPC replacements as well which might take some time. Sunni has some good ones up and I use some of them but there's a few bits here and there I'd like to do differently... maybe knight outfits for firefighters and police (either the plate armour from OFB or the chainmail outfits from EA store now that there's female conversions)... not sure what to do about mascots but I don't think cow and llama costumes work for me in a medieval setting. Maybe satyrs or something.... lol.

Date: 2013-02-16 05:53 pm (UTC)Right now, the shape-pairings I know I'm going to use are Androgyny, Athletic Girl/LBB or RNR, and RenGal/Brawny Knight. Cynnix's sneak-peek post about tunics for everyone has me sorely tempted to use the Neanderthal and the Punk Junkie, but there aren't any female shapes that suit those guys. (Look at the neck and shoulders on the Neanderthal! And the larger, manlier sexyfeet! And he's based on the Bon Voyage Bigfoot mesh, so we already know how he compares to in-game guys.) However, Cynnix has a Valkyrie in the pipeline that might work if she isn't too comic-book about the chest (she was a request, so). It's tempting to pair the Punk Junkie with the Faerie Gal, but I don't like the FG's ribcage measurement (needs to be a little wider so her arms don't hang funny. Sometimes women's thighs don't meet at the top; women's arms still usually hit their ribcage when hanging at rest) and ideally I'd want smaller breasts. More like V2, here, but with the nipples... uh, toned down. The other shape I'd love to be able to use is the Well-Rounded Sim, but again, she has no male counterpart. Cynnix is considering her, since she seems like a good step between Maxis Fat and RenGal Fit. (I actually made a really half-assed chart about the 'ideal' skintone spread.) But I swear, someday, not only will I have a mess of bodyshapes, I'll do an update to my Stolen By Fairies set to use them.
You should totally share the blockfoot Liana mesh! You're not the last blockfoot user out there, and even sexyfeet users use block feet for things like socks or light shoes.
*nods* Jusfels posted a bunch of Sherahbim teen conversions over at Feenwald, but I think they were all her Medieval things. Your post did make me seriously consider using that alpha dress in my game, but I'm already working with some Maxis nightshirts for my second-undermost layer.
I keep thinking about NPC replacements. I tell myself I can't do that until I've got my Regular People clothes and my Heraldic Clothes done. Which means I really need to get back to work on underwear. Though for firefighters, I'd suggest leather or padded armor, instead of maille or plate-- you COOK in maille and plate, and I think the holledoublet was developed after desert heat proved to be a particularly big obstacle to the first crusade getting underway. I think knight costumes (though maybe the Store ones) would work for the Uni mascots, since there are the cheerleaders, too-- Llama-based heraldry on blue and cow-based heraldry on black and they're pretty darned thematic.

Date: 2013-02-16 08:11 pm (UTC)I've avoided for the most part using bodyshapes before recently (as a lot of the meshes I didn't like for the shapes) but I did have the rengal, riogal, athletic girl and guy some time ago. All I have now is the odd androgyny mesh, athletic girl; and a ton of medieval rengal stuff but no actual sims using them. Can't call to mind what RNR is.
I quite like the look of the neanderthal, it's more stocky/bulky than did steroids to the max bulky lol. That reminds me of when someone brought out a bodyshape on insimenator with the hugest most unreal looking breasts I have ever seen... probably took out walls when they turned round! Was a biiiit disturbing lol. I don't tend to like bodyshapes thinner than maxis for some reason, they always look odd to me. Yeah, the faerie girl doesn't look like she has bones/organs in places lol. Um, yes they look like they might take peoples' eyes out lol. For some reason I am thinking of the shape of the elves in dragon age: origins, which I think looks faerie/elvish without being oddly proportioned. I remember looking at the WRS shape, as the teen version? was pretty much the maxis teen fat morph and I think they got a much better deal than any other age /gender with fat morphs. I recall the thighs on the adult clipped when they moved though. I have that mod waiting to be used... I still haven't set up a medieval hood... I've been planning it for a few years now but I am woefully slow at getting all the bits and pieces together for it.
The problem is, I have a tendency to make blockfoot versions as replacements and while that cuts down on recolouring for me, not sure it makes it much use to anyone wanting them for socks/shoes. I can make stand alone versions, it's just quicker to pull it into the same file. Think I have a few mesh edits hanging around to go up, plus the parsim mesh edits to finish and put up.
I saw those... I've been working on it for ages, so I'd already done some of them and I figured as mine were texture linked and hers not, I may as well put them up anyway. I had a look at them since some I hadn't done mesh wise; and not sure how to contact the creator but at least 2 of the teen meshes have exploding fat morphs and one has a disconnected neck on the fat morph. Ooh more nightwear... something there's not much of.
Oh god, d'uh! .... see my brain was running with "who would rescue people? knights!" Lol.... that's what I get for trying to do too much at once. You'd think after all the history shows I watch that kinda thing would stick in my head but apparently not. Yeah, I was considering them for mascots as the helm works like the llama/cow head things. I don't think there's teen versions of them though... weirdly I recently found toddler versions. Maybe the EA store ones would work for police. Ah heraldry... these kind of things make me wish I could actually draw beyond stick men lol. I was leaning towards sherahbim's textures with something to theme them. And then there's the career outfits too and I'm severely getting ahead of myself again.

Date: 2013-02-16 09:02 pm (UTC)I like the Neanderthal, too! But he needs a strong, stocky sister before I can put him in my game. (Might need a child shape on that one, as the neck is so different.) I think the reason some skinnier meshes look odd is because of the bone assignments-- the way anything broader than the Neanderthal looks weird with his muscles clipping. Pretty much I don't want to go more than two steps away from Maxis in any direction... although when I made my chart I stuck Androgyny in the middle, and I don't think going more than one step slimmer than Maxis is a good idea. (But I would like a nice waifish shape. Ballet dancer kind of thing. Not terribly skinnier than Maxis, just... narrower shoulders, leaner arms and legs, slighter hips, and on the women, smaller breasts, ideally with a different shape. With my 'must have an opposite-sex counterpart' rule, it's not like I can really use Warlokk's different cup sizes to get variation in breast shape, and Maxis and AG are pretty similar.)
But yep, WRS is just one step up from the Maxis fatmorph. Still falls prey to the 'boobs don't work that way' problem, alas-- fabric goes across, not between-- but I liked how it looked. I didn't put it in-game so I have no idea what the thighs do... but in a Medieval game, ladies' thighs are usually covered anyway.
There's always texture referencing. And I hear tell it isn't too hard to make a default into a stand-alone, so if the mesh is already out there, somebody could do that.
I didn't know that-- the meshes she used, I just took out of my game. Are they meshes Jusfels made herself? I know she has an account at GoS (she has an update thread) so she could be contacted there. And yep, nightclothes are on my list! Five difference child-through-elder outfits that'll fall in some combination of Underwear, Sleepwear, and Swimwear. (I'm thinking anything with chausses doesn't get to be nightclothes, and anything past the knee doesn't get to be swimwear. That way I can tell my categories apart when I do the 'pick new clothes' option on the Clothing Tool.)
Don't feel bad! Using the red OFB armor was my first instinct, but I spent so damn long researching things that now I know metal armor would be a really bad idea for somebody running into a fire. I mean, it makes sense-- cans explode if you heat them up too much. ... The mascots and cheerleaders are teenagers? I thought they were YAs. (Though the cheerleaders would need a heraldic surcote anyway, so they look different from the mascots.) The Store maille would be awesome for cops, since male and female use the same textures. There's plenty of room on the back for heraldry, too. As for career outfits, there are actually a couple of ways to default those. Personally I just use a Wear Casual To Work hack, but I keep thinking I might integrate something into my default replacement careers-- they call to outfit GUIDs for the different career levels, so I can't think why replacing the GUID with the GUID of a custom outfit wouldn't work. It'd leave me free to have uniforms where I want 'em and change the GUID-thingy to the same as not wearing anything to work for where I don't want 'em.
Also, I can't draw heraldry, but there's a lot of good heraldic clip art out there. That's how I've made my stuff.

Date: 2013-02-20 12:01 am (UTC)Yeah maybe something like an amazonian shape? Broad, stocky, muscular; more so than athletic girl? Damn my lack of bodyshape skills. I haven't even got one proper mesh for my shape yet beyond the nude (working on the peasant sleeves dress sherahbim used for her fairytale and maiden dresses in between everything else). That sounds like a nice shape, the ballet dancer one. Yeah I think that's what bothers me, when the assignments look wrong (otherwise I would want a dwarf shape) and body parts that clip.
Vacuum formed tops look weird. That was the biggest issue I found with warlokk's magnets (my bodyshape started out with maxis nude and warlokk's rengal magnets which I moved around; I tried to make some outfits but it messed up how dresses hung).
Some of them are, yes. The ones that exploded were, but I removed pretty much everything (it either duplicated stuff other creators had made that I had, or stuff I had made myself) except the juliette mesh conversion (that's the one with the neck issue on the fat morph) and the conversion of the meshes for faraday and moss as I hadn't finished doing them and they don't have morphs so no problems). Will have to send her a message, if I remember lol. Think I'm going down with a bug of some sort.
I wonder what would make a good replacement for fire fighters. Trying to think of what other male/female npc/work outfits share the same textures. They're YA but there's teen versions of the cheerleader outfit and there's the llama suit for teens which is used for one of the careers (um sport related one?) as a work outfit. Heard of those hacks but never used them, I quite like seeing my sims go off to work in a different outfit. Oooh default replacement careers, sounds good since without using any careers its a bit difficult to keep all sims busy.
Ah I will have to have a look around when I get round to it. Must finish all these sherahbim edits/recolours/texture referencing first though. And the parsimonious edits.

Date: 2013-02-20 01:09 am (UTC)Cynnix has one in the pipeline that sounds promising; she's calling it Valkyrie and it's sort of a She-Hulk kind of shape. The only part that sounds awkward to me are the comic-book breasts, but if those got scaled down, you could make another shape and call it Shieldmaiden and it'd be perfect. *grins* Sometimes I don't mind a little clipping-- like thighs on a heavy shape or the interior arm muscles on a bodybuilder, but there's only so broad you can make the shoulders before the Sim heads start looking like... like the knob on top of the neck you're supposed to attach the real head to. And I don't know if you can actually make the shoulders much narrower or if that would be a bone assignment nightmare... but I think you can change the slope and shape of them, so the ladies don't have such a 1980s square shoulderpad look.
I can see how the magnets would be useful for some things, but I got the feeling they were all based on the nude shape. You'd have to have a separate set of them for clothing meshes, and even then you'd always have to make adjustments.
I thought I'd seen most of those meshes made elsewhere. I guess I thought she was using other creators' stuff. And I hope you feel better! My back decided it was time for me to spend three days sitting very very still; I still twinge but I think I'm finally fully mobile again.
Maybe some leather armor would work for firemen. Scale armor would be easy to retexture. And of course, plenty of padding over the arms and legs, to insulate. They don't necessarily need to take a hit, firemen, they just need to look protected from the heat.
Are the teen cheerleader and llama outfits connected to the YA ones? I thought they were basegame. Although there's some defaulting method that doesn't default everything on the same mesh, but that's deep magic that I don't understand. And I like seeing my Sims change for work, but not into the Maxis stuff... and finding default replacement outfits that're up to my now-insane standards is a frickin' nightmare.
Heraldry is fun but it can eat your brains.
