Here is the men's part of the hair dump. Technically, you're seeing this first, but I should be posting in quick succession.

Date: 2010-07-27 07:57 pm (UTC)(as a random aside, I recently stumbled on the comic your avatar is from, hah, that was a fun read :D)

Date: 2010-07-27 11:17 pm (UTC)Bite Me is such a fun comic. The artist is doing one now that focuses on Luther, if you're interested.
no subject
Date: 2010-07-28 03:55 am (UTC)I've read it, not sure what to think about it yet. Too early in the story to tell, perhaps. Bite Me was fun, yes :)
no subject
Date: 2010-07-28 11:21 am (UTC)*nods* That's true. Although she's really improved at historical costumes since Bite Me... but Bite Me wasn't too serious about period accuracy in a lot of ways. Just enough for it to be really important to the overall screwball comedy going on.
no subject
Date: 2010-07-29 04:11 am (UTC)Oh yes, the costuming and the art in general looks very, very nice in the new one (not that Bite Me was bad on that front, but you can tell it's older).
no subject
Date: 2010-07-29 12:05 pm (UTC)The design of clothing in Bite Me is actually pretty good (although I'm not sure about Lucien's doublet, but I think the conclusion you're supposed to get from that is 'fencing outfit') but Dylan tended to keep the skirts indecently short, I suspect out of a love of drawing boots. For which I can't really blame her. Boots are awesome.
no subject
Date: 2010-07-29 02:47 pm (UTC)Agreed, boots are pretty damn awesome. It reminds me that I still need to finish those victorian boots I was trying to mesh (too many projects, too little time or desire).

Date: 2010-07-29 05:20 pm (UTC)Boots on a clothing mesh or boots as props?
no subject
Date: 2010-07-29 08:17 pm (UTC)Boots on a clothing mesh with possibly also making them as boots for sims 3 and if I felt like it, as props. They're on a large backburner atm though.

Date: 2010-07-30 02:28 am (UTC)Two of my African violets are getting kind of necky, but I don't know if I should transfer them to bigger pots or not-- I know they really like to be pot-bound.
Yeah, that back burner gets bigger and bigger every day... *glances at long-ass to-do list*

Date: 2010-07-30 04:25 am (UTC)Could always wind it into an interesting shape. Ivy's easy that way. Heck, turn it into an ivy unicorn ;)
Hm, well does they look a bit crowded? I'm not much of an expert on african violets (like, at all).
Yes... well, I just knocked some items off it atleast. But then I also added some new stuff to it. And I got some ideas if retro wins (which is looking likely atm) that I may try to do... argh.. more stuff to do D:

Date: 2010-07-30 05:40 am (UTC)It's still a little surprised nothing's eating it. I should test it in the bedroom again-- it totally doesn't go with the office. I'm hoping to get it back to its former squid-like glory.
No, they don't really look crowded... mostly they just sort of... lean, when they get too tall. One of them's resting on the edge of its pot. They look great, they're just kind of off-center.
Lord I know how that goes. I just did my last Rose hair until the middle of September at least-- my August moratorium on creating Sims crap may not include prepped hairs (deleting useless ages so I don't screw up with the binning tool later) or making new lists. I will find so many things to do in five weeks...
no subject
Date: 2010-07-30 07:55 pm (UTC)I hope you manage it then! It's great watching a plant recover, or grow large and lucious. Not so great when they wilt and slowly fade away.
Well, they should be able to take a repotting, right?
My backlist just got a bit shorter with the release of a bunch of hairs on my LJ last night, woo for that. And I just started making a dent in an old request I had taken up for someone I know which is unfortunately mostly tedious work (6 accessories, 4 meshes per accessory... yeah... don't have to do any actual meshing, it's just converting, still tedious). And now I got ideas for the retro theme I may want to try out....
Got a lot of prepped hairs lying around? (and don't talk to me about Rose... damn her older meshes. That wasn't so much a little neck gap on that donation hair as a floating scalp).
no subject
Date: 2010-07-30 08:24 pm (UTC)I'm surprised it came back at all-- the spider mites really did a job on it. Not as bad as they did to the roses, and damn but that makes me sad. I'd love to have sweetheart roses, they're so pretty.
They can be repotted, I just know the root ball pretty much fills the size pot they like, so there's not much room to bury the necks. (And one of them, I'm kind of scared to switch to a larger pot. It's got to be almost a foot and a half across.)
That's a lot of meshes. I... actually don't have a LOT of fixed hairs right now... I'm almost to the end of my list-- my current hair list, anyway. (Woohoo!) I do have seventy-five more I need to prep, but... well. That can wait a bit. (I may do it in dribs and drabs if I need a sewing break. Preparing CC is not creating CC-- it's like ironing your fabric before you put it away.)
I'll never understand why people leave huge gaps. Or don't let you alpha-edit away things like bangs. Or make it so that the front AND back side of each wisp of hair has its own group.
no subject
Date: 2010-07-31 03:52 am (UTC)Such a shame :( Always sad when some pest ruins a nice plant.
Well, I finished them earlier. Except for all the texture work. It was tedious but hey, another thing to cross off my list. And woo for being nearly at the end of your list (even if you did end up making a new one after :P). I feel less bad about going back to sorting hairs now that I have another obligation taken off my list.
Neither do I. I mean, for some hairs it's age, really. That hair was old, maybe they didn't know better. Same with the groups thing? (it's not actually groups themselves, lots of groups is good for opacity layers, but that they're all named something different). Before a certain time people didn't know you could name them all the same and have them use only one texture. So a looot of the older hairs have that problem. Newer hairs have less excuses on that front. But new hairs with gigantic gaps or odd scalps.. no excuse.. really.
no subject
Date: 2010-07-31 02:55 pm (UTC)Lists get long! I've got two more hairs left that I want to finish today, which leaves me three on the list I've got to wait on (Amaryll's fixing some mesh weirdness on a silly mesh and I love her for it, I lost my groove on Nouk's Male Long Hair and will try to find it again later, and I'm still undecided on whether or not I want to do Nouk's pigtails before Pooklet comes up with a bang-free version.)
Yeah, I think most of the hairs I have trouble with in terms of 'why are there this many groups? WHY?' are older or based off of older hairs-- Sugar and Caffeine's Jake Sully Braid is based on Nouk's ponytail, and boy does that put me off Pookletting the ponytail (even if I know it needs it), and Tyler, Male Long, Gaius, and Roman are all on the old side. I like them, but they're old. And there are no other, newer, easier-to-recolor hairs like them, unfortunately-- they all bring something unique to the party. (Because when's the last time you saw a long, loose, smooth male hairstyle that didn't interfere with alien ears and fit close to the head instead of being full of anime shampoo commercial volume?)
no subject
Date: 2010-08-01 05:35 am (UTC)I just get distracted. I started on my retro theme project today and then ended up spending the entire evening instead trying (and eventually succeeding) to get the elder age on xmsims m70 working (because it doesn't have one, damn you xmsims) and fiddling with a sim's face in milkshape to see if I could get that to work. And ooh, what's wrong with nouk's male long hair that you lost your groove on it? Lot of texture files?
Yeah, I know what you mean. Occasionally I come across one when doing some retexture work and you open it up and there's 7+ files per age staring at you and it's just "uuuurrrrgh". I much prefer ones that are just 1 texture file. There *is* or *was* a reason for it, but things have improved as more knowledge is available. Though neckgaps and gigantic heads still seems to run rampant.
And it's been a while since I saw such a hairstyle, yes ;) I am working on something that may fit that bill too, hopefully, but I hate to say "definitely surely" because sometimes I end up shelving good ideas. And I do like some of the shampoo hairs XD (nice term) but it really depends. Both on the hair and the sim.

Date: 2010-08-01 05:48 am (UTC)Dude, I know how that goes. "I'll just sit down and do X. Man I am so bored with X, I need to look at something else for just a little while... *completes Y and Z, epic projects in their own right* *looks over at X* ... Ooops." I lost my groove on the Male Long Hair because... well, after a certain point, I just couldn't stand to look at it anymore, and now I've forgotten what the hell I was doing. I'll start fresh in a month or five weeks. I know more sneaky tricks now.
Yeah, I just re-did Tiggerpum's elf braid hair TWICE-- first because I damn well wasn't going to save twenty textures plus elders for each age, second because if you have twenty-five textures, WHY would you have EIGHTEEN different alphas? Dude seriously for real now. Took that down to one alpha, reduced the file size by 90% before compressing. I still backed out the textures-- made templates and a donor file in Body Shop, then swapped the textures with SimPE. If something's got... more than four textures per age and five or six ages or more than ten textures per age and ANY number of ages, that's my tactic from now on. It's faster.
There was never any excuse for neck gaps, but I do realize that the giant heads are considered more attractive (mostly cos they look younger) in some cultures.
I'll keep my fingers crossed, because... well, mostly because the world needs more long hair for men-- more hair for men in general, really. (The Extra Body Shampoo hairs don't work for me as well, because I'm trying to avoid hairs that look like they need product to work. It's frustrating. When I ever get back to my Alien Invasion game, man. Anything goes. Totally anything.)
no subject
Date: 2010-08-01 11:45 pm (UTC)Well I finished my distraction project (creating an elf sim with a face edited in milkshape, mostly to change the ears, and have him be able to breed that on) but still no motivation to work on the retro theme thing. I hope we both get our groove back, so to speak.
What? I mean seriously, what? 25 textures? 18 alphas? What? That' s insane.
I still suspect half the neck gap hairs are non-tested and the other half aren' t even sim hairs but hairs from other 3d programs converted to sims and just sort of smashed onto a sim's ill-fitting skull. And maybe, about the giant heads, but I find it just looks weird and unbalanced. Coupled with the epic fivehead sims can suffer from, it's just not attractive.
Not a long hair I'm working on, sadly. Though do intend to have it work with sim ears properly (I hate ear clipping if I can avoid it, not always possible but I try). Hah, and the alien invasion thing reminds me that I was trying to find a peggy hair the other day and I came across some real winners. I recall seeing something with, I don't even know, some weird braids sticking out in odd directions and just really odd hair and thinking "this'd look good on an alien".
no subject
Date: 2010-08-02 05:37 pm (UTC)Oooh, ears. I looked around Alfred Askew's LJ last night and got all excited over the fact that she's working on a set of face templates. I really like the mix I have now (Katuchan, Pooklet, Spookymuffin, and Oepu), but most of them I like as templates for starting to sculpt rather than as 'hello I am a random townie!' For one thing, I always seem to make my eyes on the smallish side. It looks more realistic to me.
I know! The damn files were like 2Mb each. Then I used the same alpha for everything and suddenly they were around 500kb each. Bad Tiggerypum. Very bad. I'm sure I downloaded them before I had any idea what was going on with the file size. Twenty-five textures in Body Shop, and eighteen different alphas so that there were, hey. Eighteen textures in SimPE. OOF.
There are just... not enough good hairs out there, really. Not nearly enough. And that's part of the reason I'm Pookletting so many male hairs-- I lean towards smaller ones that look physically possible with little to no styling product, so I'ma Pooklet the hell out of those hairs. I went through my Downloads folder and sorted hair-- I have seventy-three hairs I want to Pooklet and replace (already been Pooklet'd but not fully, love the mesh but hate the textures, that sort of thing) and seventy-eight hairs I just want Pooklet'd too (Nouked hairs, Nouk's hairs, Sims 2 Store hairs), and I do have some favorite Maxis styles that'll go on the list (with age conversions where possible) as Ja does Pooklet'd defaults, because... well, that's the hard part.
Some of Peggy's hairs are so awesome, and others are so... out there... Sometimes I wonder where she gets her ideas. I know the failbraid actually has a real-world source-- I mean, it's exact. There's no way this could be a coincidence. I mean, really, all it needs is the little crown.
no subject
Date: 2010-08-03 04:03 am (UTC)That's just insane. I've seen high numbers of files before, but 18 different alphas is a new one for me.
There really aren't. Similarly I've been pookleting those annoying raon male hairs with the textures that need a ton of warp and some hand painting to look good, because there's just not too many alternatives and I like those hairs. I wish meshers would stop doing the same long hairstyle with slightly different variations and come up with a few less huge, less coiffed, nice hairstyles. But speaking as a mesher, for me atleast, it's hard. Not meshing as such as just, finding a hair to do, breaking it down into parts and then actually doing it.
Will be looking forward to any other hairs you release!
I guess she gets her ideas from the red carpet, hollywood, maybe fashion mags. I suspect definitely including in that would be asian fashion stuff. I do notice many of the somewhat older ones are a bit more realistically proportioned, oddly enough. Wonder what made her start bloating heads. Or Juice. Or whoever else makes hairs over there.
no subject
Date: 2010-08-03 07:01 pm (UTC)There was no reason for it, either. It was insane. So I fixed it. Just. Sheesh.
Oof, I looked at one of those hairs-- I forget which one-- and took it off my list because I don't have the skills to paint and don't have the tools to warp.
Maybe people are more willing to pay for the bobblehead look? Or maybe it's easier to hide gaps. Or maybe as she's gone on Simming, she's decided the lollipop-headed thing is more to her tastes?
no subject
Date: 2010-08-04 03:39 am (UTC)Yeah, the raon hairs get pretty nuts sometimes. I think I have most either done, or downloaded from someone else by now. Though I still want to take a look at m13.. again (it's one of those fun warpy ones).
All valid possibilities. We' ll never know.
no subject
Date: 2010-08-04 06:12 am (UTC)It was F16 and the MtF version of it I looked at, poked at, and said "Screw this, yo." It had been retextured, but it just looked dry and I got fed up.
Thus we just treasure the good hairs and spork the weird ones, or use them on aliens. Because aliens need weird hair. (Although mine are militaristic aliens, so all but the high-ranking folk (and the Bon Voyage tourists, man I wish I'd made them in Body Shop instead of CAS) also need short, neat hair.)
