I play Medieval. (Yes, yes, everyone knows.) My Medieval Sims have a house of worship. It's very handy, really-- I use the Gray Woman statue as a central feature. I also like to use the Spiritual Shrine of Odd Blessings from Bon Voyage as a sort of poor box or collection plate-- Sims toss a coin in and maybe get a minor miracle for their charity.
Except, well. The style of the thing doesn't really mesh with the style of my churches, and I always kind of want to stick the Gray Woman statue behind the offering bowl and... well, when I tried that, she had roof sticking out of her skirts. Not very flattering.
So I says to myself, I says, "Hat, the first object recolors you made were invisible. Surely you can do it again!" After I told myself not to call me Shirley, I set to work.

If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride.
Okay, so. The original shrine looks like this:

And can be found in the Sculpture section of the catalog. You throw a Simoleon into the shrine, it lights up, you get a good wish, a bad wish, or bupkis, and then it takes a Sim hour or so before you can wish again. Sims will sometimes roll a want to make a wish on a lot with a Shrine.

I removed the sign for all recolors (sorry, sign, your UV mapping drove me buggy), and had to remove the scattered coins-- they're slaved to one coin, so if I left the ones on the ground, I'd be leaving the ones on the roof, too. Floating coins! Aside from that, they come in various combinations of no house, no pedestal, and no fence. You get all four recolors above-- they're clearly labeled, feel free to pick and choose.
Now. What can you do with a semi-invisible Spirtual Shrine of Odd Blessings?
First, turn Move Objects on. You may also want to turn Snap Objects to Grid off. Then, select your favorite godlike statue.

For no-pedestal shrines, just plop that godlike statue directly behind the offering bowl. For shrines with pedestals, you will most likely need to use a shiftable OMSP. Aphrodite is on one, as well as the sun disk.

As you can see, the shrine still works with the invisible recolor. The wish effects may look silly with some statues, but at least you still get them.
This object does have some flaws-- one of them, you can see in my outdoor photos. I couldn't remove the shadows for the shrine, so if you use the fenceless recolor, you're stuck with fence shadows. Sorry about that. The simple solution is to use the fenceless version indoors. (The shadow of the shrine itself doesn't bother me as much-- you'll probably be putting a statue there, after all, which will cast its own shadow.)

No shadows there, see?
Second, as you zoom out, the original roofline occasionally becomes a little bit visible.

Inside the circle. Circle itself is just Photoshop. I gave it my best, but it's one of those flickery little things. It doesn't show at all at tight zooms, and a larger statue will probably hide it completely. The UV mapping on this mofo is a little confusing, and I pared down absolutely everything I could without leaving holes in the offering bowl.
Speaking of the offering bowl...

I thought gold coins only was a little optimistic. These also match my money defaults.
The usual boilerplate applies-- if no money changes hands, do what you will with these. If you make new recolors based on mine, please link me to them-- I'd love some new textures for this. Do not upload to TSR, do not use for paysites or donation files unless you agree to the terms listed in my policy, as shown on the sidebar and in the Read-Me.
As a caveat, alpha-editing an object (which is all an invisible recolor is) only means that you can't see those polys, not that the game stops rendering them. If you load down your lot with shrines and statues and it lags like hell, well. Dude.
This requires Bon Voyage, or you're just wasting space in your downloads folder. Speaking of wasting space, this has been compressorized, so you're at least not wasting too much of it. Speaking of invisible objects, many thanks must go to Lord Darcy and HugeLunatic for their mini-tutorials on invisible object creation.
... Yep, that's about all you need to know.

Date: 2010-04-16 10:31 am (UTC)A quick glance shows me that deleting bits is fairly simple--I just removed the little house-thing entirely with no problems. That means you could still have the scattered coins without having to invisible them, so long as you kept the pedastal in the back--or those could be deleted from the mesh as well to keep the coins on the ground, regardless.
So--keeping in mind that I'm still pretty clueless when it comes to objects :D--how much of this thing would you like gone? Chucking those bits and replacing the mesh should be simple enough, and since I registered with the SimPE GUID database before registration went tits up, I could give it a new GUID too if it needs it.
It remains to be seen what this'd do to the shadows, of course!

Date: 2010-04-16 11:12 am (UTC)Well, I me, personally, I think the fence shadow is the worst offender, followed closely by the house shadow. A version with either just the offering bowl (and coins mebbe?) or the offering bowl and pedestal (and coins!) would be pretty frickin' sweet. It's not like Sims can steal coins, or that a titchy little bamboo fence would stop a truly determined coin thief. The bees, on the other hand, that might do it. I actually think a new object would be preferable to a replacement-- I actually do like the shrine itself, but the bowl or bowl-and-pedestal is a lot more versatile.
Did SimPE registration actually go tits up? I thought Kissingyougoodbye was just having trouble with the firewall.

I didn't follow up on that, so I dunno--she said something about someone on the forums saying that since creating was dying for TS2 anyway (*snrk*) she might as well make hex numbers up, but it could have been someone trying to be funny. I should check. At any rate, my log in works juuuust fine, so.
I can nix the shrine, fence, and sign easily. I'll get rid of the coins actually on the pedastal as well so recolours that make it invisible won't result in floating coins and the coins on the ground can stay. And, assuming I am not utterly fail at this (I think I figured out why SimPE churned so long--I didn't make sure it was ONLY using base game and BV, so it was gurning through every single other EP and SP *headdesk*), it should be standalone. :D
Hopefully through all of this I'll figure out wtf the shadow issue is.
On a totally unrelated note, how's the child ninja mesh working out?

Date: 2010-04-16 11:30 am (UTC)Which I think is a giant pile of FAIL on their part. Yes, obviously everyone jumped ship to Sims 3, that's why the TS2 sections of sites have no activity whatsoever. *eyeroll*

Date: 2010-04-16 11:39 am (UTC)And aha. Yeah, last I saw, it had been narrowed down to individual firewall problems, but I'm registered so I can't check for sure. My login works, too.
Woohoo! At the very least, invisible pedestal recolors have to be MUCH lower-poly than invisible everything recolors. Standalone is also awesome! (Someday I should learn more about how to do things like that, given my facedesk-inducing issues with object creation. Or just stick with making recolors and defaults, as I actually know how to do that.)
Child ninja is win! I admit I only tested it in CAS, but no gaps or 'your graphics card is too good for this mesh' flickers, which is always made of win. Mapping is the same, so recoloring was stupidly easy. Now my monk-missionary-tourists can have mini-monks with them! Anything in particular you wanna be patron saint of?

Hmm, I never thought I'd be in line for sainthood for anything. *g* Chocolate? Coffee? Curmudgeonliness? XD Actually, books/writing would be appropriate, if you don't already have a saint for it.

Date: 2010-04-16 12:36 pm (UTC)At the moment, I have only stolen St. Bestine from Phaenoh, except she ended up 'Bestina,' and not the lots themselves, just the name for the Gray Woman statue. (My church system is ill-defined as yet; I have the idea that what I really want is an order actually devoted to good works and the like, since I don't actually seem to have a deity in mind, just saints. The Twikkii Islanders are easier to plan religions for; I have no names, but so far they've got a fire god and a sky god and a sea god and an earth god; the fire god loses his temper sometimes and startles the earth god, but mostly they seem to be a pretty easygoing bunch.)

Date: 2010-04-16 01:53 pm (UTC)I like the idea of a believe system based purely on saints, people who were just so awesome during life that they exist after death to give blessings. X)
Er, I feel a little weird for asking, but did you want anything for this simly saint? If anything, the columbine flowers from Parsimonious would work as a symbol; I got my screenname from part of their Latin name.

Date: 2010-04-16 02:19 pm (UTC)That's about what I was thinking-- I mean, to my Sims, I'm God. I bestow upon them miracles and order and inspire them to do things that will lead nations or just keep them from living in their own frickin' filth. But the idea of just a system of saints-- Bestina for protection from fire or protection of children or selfless sacrifice, et cetera-- really appeals, because... I don't know, I just kinda like it. Where the Church is about the deeds of people, and what they do, and the human miracles made with hands or words or deeds.
Far as things needed for saints... Got a statue you like? Particularly if there's a good big version and an itty bitty tabletop version like this? Cos I use that a lot, and I'm starting to like the idea of a sort of charity shop run by the Church, where they can sell small statues like that and crap Sims give them as gifts and maybe veggies from the abbey gardens.

Date: 2010-04-16 03:25 pm (UTC)OH GOD I KNOW. Only mentally do I have a complete list of all the crap I need to make. On the other hand, current tests show that my invisible default replacement boom box works, so folk with period games aren't stuck with a boom box on the fire dance mat, and I finally got a shot of a big enough tip to show the tip jar replacement works-- I did it for my Business and Money set, but it turns out with a large enough tip, Sims drop bills in the jar. Also, gotta finish BV/tropical defaults and gotta finish werewolves and heraldry is the project that will not DIE and once Pooklet's new actions are released, my one single hair set gets updated and and and and *ded*
This lot comes with a buttload of statues. I can't find where they came from ORIGINALLY, but. Buttload of statues. I always, always need more statues.

Date: 2010-04-16 04:23 pm (UTC)My mental list is similarly scary, and, heh. All that stuff I said I'd try to get done before I vanish for a month... not happening, unless I want to blow off all of the mending I need to do and wear only ragged jeans and t-shirts the entire trip. (Which I do not, so, mending it is.)
(I am overly fond of parentheses, myself. I get a little ridiculous with them sometimes.)
Oooh, statues. I'll have a look through those. And... hmm. It occurs to me there are some interesting ones in Fable... ... Oh no, another item on my to-do list. *facedesk*

Date: 2010-04-16 04:29 pm (UTC)See. The to-do list of doom? It's why I'm actually glad I don't know how to mesh. If I don't know (or rather, learn) how to mesh, there's half a chance I might be able to, say... finish The Great Default Replacement Project or the stupid Store heraldry. If I learned how to MESH, I'd have to make sure every statue ever had a centerpiece-enabled OFB-sellable itty bitty copy, I'd have to add pregmorphs to EVERYTHING, I'd have to learn to do all kinds of things... and then when would I SLEEP. ... No, I'm already bad at sleep. When would I EAT? There, that one's better.
Man, I went and looked at some Castaway Stories videos and now I kind of want to get it just to take it apart. What do these do? They look awesome doing it! How can I GET THEM? Yeah, you know the drill.
