Le Chausseur, la Deuxième Partie

So, some time ago, I put up some much-needed Medieval men's underwear, which you can find right here. And I was really happy with it! I still am, in fact, it's just that there have been some new meshes done, plus some conversions of some meshes, and in general it was just time to expand the chausseur's stock.

I'm going to repeat the fashion history blather that the first Chausseur post, because there are really only so many history lessons you can give about underwear.
So, pretty much from the fall of the Roman Empire (or the rise of the early Church, whichever you count as coming sooner) on through to the French Revolution, Western European men wore hose, sometimes with breeches, sometimes with tunics. During the Middle Ages, there were two kinds of hose: joined hose (which functioned like wool leggings with a fly) and split hose (which were basically socks that went all the way up to the crotch). What we'd think of as underwear was called braises or breeks, and it served two purposes; to protect the clothes immediately over it from generalized body funk, and to tie one's split hose in place, so you didn't end up looking like the saggy baggy elephant.
Joined hose were something that came into fashion during the Late Middle Ages and early Renaissance; you can see some really spiffy examples on Mio's Romeo meshes. I try to keep my game set in the High Middle Ages, somewhere in the 1200-1400 range, so I've been making split hose.
Lots and lots of split hose.
Anyway, the neat thing about hose is that they weren't, as you might expect, knitted. Nope. They were bias-cut wool which was fulled all to hell and gone until it was super-soft. The wool was then cut and sewn with incredible precision (because a seam in the wrong place could cause blisters on the foot) and sold by chausseurs, or hosiers. They were too complicated a garment for the average seamstress to make at home, and required an apprenticeship to really understand, in a time before paper patterns, how these glorified tube socks fit together.
Okay, so back before, I did hose for boys, teen boys, adult men, and elders. This time... Okay, let's start with something that isn't actually underwear.

Behold, FantasyRogue's hose-and-poulaines! (You don't get the tunics. Someday I will do tunic recolors; that day is not today.) These come in the same twenty colors I originally used for my chausses, with FantasyRogue's textures on the shoes and braises-- although on some of the shoes I did a black recolor because brown just didn't look right. They are available in Townie-enabled and non-townie for boys, teen boys, and YA-through-elder.

I also reinvented the wheel a bit-- these are exactly the same as my original AM and TM chausses... only they're done on Aquilegia's Improved Fatmorph. That's right, no more heavyset guys with chicken legs. This is not a mesh default, so if for some reason you WANT heavyset guys with chicken legs, you can totally keep my originals. These, too, come in townie and non-townie. There's no EM version on these, because the elder guys don't have an improved fatmorph that I know of.

Speaking of Aquilegia, I adore her Androgyny bodyshape and wish there were more Medieval meshes available for it. Until there are, I can at least provide underwear for teen-through-elder. These are not townie-enabled.

... And for the ladies, too, in two varieties! You can use Aquilegia's Androgyny for your completely flat-chested ladies OR in bound-breast varieties for your ladies who have decided they want to disguise themselves as men for whatever reason. (Maybe they want to enlist, or want to better educate themselves, or just don't like wearing skirts, whatever.) I nicked the breast binding textures from Alix, but I sort of expanded them so that they cover more of the torso-- you won't see any cleavage peeking out the top or the bottom, and I really wanted a very secure look to the bindings. These are not townie-enabled.

Important details! The bottom-only chausses are only available for Casual, because that's how separates work by default. All the underwear chausses are available as underwear, sleepwear, and swimwear. Everything is compressorized and dark colors have been texture-replaced in SimPE to prevent some really nasty crunching. On townie-enabled things, you can choose EITHER the townie-friendly OR the non-townie version; you can't have both, they're named the same and they'll conflict. (You can put in townie-friendly versions of the duller, cheaper dyes and leave the rich colors like Peacock and Wine non-townie, though, that'll work.)
Okay, onwards to credit and thanks and then, a million links.
First, I have to thank Aquilegia, for her blockfoot no-wedgie meshes for both the Androgyny bodyshape and the Improved Fatmorph bodyshape; without those, I'd be stuck using true-nude meshes and all of mine have sexyfeet toes. Next, I have to thank FantasyRogue for her awesome bottom-only chausses; that's an utterly brilliant idea and I don't know why there aren't more shoe options and different tunics to play with. Cynnix also needs a big ol' mention, because Cynnix converted those bottom-only chausses for kids and teens. Because there are never enough anything for kids and teens, especially the boys. I have stolen textures; the underwear braises are from All About Style, the breast bindings are from Alix, and the shoes and braises on the bottom-only chausses are original FantasyRogue. My colors are eye-droppered from hand-dyed textiles found on Handkraaft and Medieval Silkwork on Blogspot (except for the Emerald color, which is from All About Style), overlaid with Aquilegia's linen for texture and a desaturated and very very faint adult male body texture for shading.
I've also got to thank Lyn for making sure I had a working copy of Photoshop, Quaxi for SimPE, DJ for the Compressorizer, and last but not least, the Society for Creative Anachronism, for being dedicated enough to wear period clothes from the skin out, and for posting their photos and research. Without all that, I wouldn't know a thing about split hose.
Oh god, it's time to download.

Wanna help me feed my cats?
In case you feel like dropping me a buck or two, should you have a buck or two to spare. Donors get two things at the moment: a) a link to the Super Secret Cat Gallery, full of pictures of the cats you'll be feeding, updated sporadically when the cats do something photogenic and I'm fast enough on the trigger to catch it, and b) a link to the list of content I have done-but-not-screencapped, nearly done, partly done, or in the planning stages, and the option to suggest what ought to be in the next batch of things I focus on.

Date: 2013-03-09 12:10 am (UTC)Right now, I'm really only making Medieval content; I have a to-do list with several thousand things on it, so I just plain don't have time to make content for a period I don't play if I'm not signed up for a trade or something.
