Oh man I love Servos. Servos and Plantsims are easily my two favorite Supernaturals, probably because they make life so frickin' easy. However, in a Medieval-- or fantasy or fairy-tale-- game, you run into some... problems, with Servos.
Now, of course you can use my funky wooden puppets or Phaenoh's armored Servos or even Amaryll's androgynous Steampunk Servos. And they all indeed have their charms-- and I've used two of the three. See, what happened was, I made my own wooden Servos and just loved them all to bits... and then I volunteered to help Amaryll test her androgynous Servos.
Yeah. Wow.
I love them, in-game; they're incredibly graceful. I didn't like that they were metal-- I'd gotten attached to my wooden ones-- but I spent so much time just watching Serviette walk that I knew I was gonna have to keep the mesh around.
So I did.

Behold the Servo! It can do almost anything a Sim can do, and it never gets hungry, sick, uncomfortable, or smelly! Lovingly crafted of polished golden oak and inlaid with magic crystals and runes, these jointed wooden constructs are sure to be a great help to any house that can afford them.
Front and back. There are no separate formal outfits, unfortunately.

Have them entertain your guests, cook your meals, clean your home, work in your shop...

Work your magic, even.

The back of the head is very important. So are the eyes, really, but... well. The back of the head shows your Servo's gender via the Mars and Venus symbols. Witches have a pentacle set into the circle, werewolves a lunar cycle symbol, and vampires the Taurus horns added to the circle (which alchemically indicates modification through coagulation. Sounded about right). Serviette, then, is a female witch.

Which you can also tell by her blue eyes. The eyes are quartz crystal, and the color can tell you a great deal about your Servo's life state. Unaltered Servos have green eyes; witches have blue while Wizards have purple. Vampires have red and werewolves have yellow, though with slightly different shades for male and female.
Female Servos have a slight red stain to the lips and cheeks; males do not.

Sometimes this will happen. That little glowy ball does like to play peek-a-boo when Servos bend in certain directions.
But wait there's more!
Don't like your Servos to be quite so decorated? Think plain wood should be enough for anybody? Want to add your own mystic carvings?

No problem! Thoughtfully, a totally blank Servo is provided for those who like a more virginal look. Front and back.

Really, that's less risky than it looks.
Now, there is one small problem...

There's no deactivated mesh for Amaryll's Servos (although I live in hope that someone will create one someday), so your dormant Servos will look kind of... weird. There's no help for it, alas-- I don't mesh. Other people do! A fix exists, and you can grab the link at the end.

Serviette by day...

... And by night, where you can really tell she's got a high-gloss finish. The highly polished look I like on my Servos isn't everybody's cup of tea, but... I like it. However, I also like making people happy, so as a separate bonus to this default, I've uploaded a Servo Matte Package. Once installed, this little package makes any and all Servos in any and all life states flat matte instead of super shiny. Mine, Amaryll's, Phaenoh's, Gwill's, The Ninth Wave's, EAxis's, anybody's. Everybody's.

I've also uploaded two variations on the theme of catalog descriptions-- the first just changes the catalog text to what you see there. I didn't want my Medieval Sims making robots and I didn't want to have to change it every. Damn. Time they built a Servo. The second not only changes the catalog description but puts the deactivated Servo in your Buy Mode catalog under Electronics Misc, for six thousand Simoleons. Just in case you're not into that whole 'handcrafted' thing, or you have some mods to test. You can only use one of these at a time, so choose wisely.
... Okay, out of Servo pictures, on to the notes.
The Default Crap: These are Default Replacements, and as with black widow spiders and Immortals, there can be only one. Make sure you don't have any other Servo defaults in your game before using mine; doubling up on defaults may yield inconsistant results (last mod loaded wins).
The "Why are these files so big?" Crap: I love my crisp, clean oak textures. They're delicious. However, when shrunk down to 1024x1024 pixels, the woodgrain suddenly goes all crunchy. That's not so delicious. To fix this problem, the Servo body textures are at 2048x2048. I neither have nor intend to make a version with a reduced filesize; if you want to, be my guest. Everything has been compressorized, but the Servo files still weigh in around 10 MB each.
The Policy Crap: Use it for anything you want so long as no money changes hands. I have this intense problem with demanding money for default replacements and it's against Amaryll's policy anyway.
Credit is Not Crap: Gotta thank Amaryll for her mesh and Ephemera for the ball-jointed doll skin I butchered and everybody in the Garden of Shadows Show Off Your Creations thread for critique and suggestions. I also have to thank Lyn for making sure I had a working copy of Photoshop, Quaxi for SimPE, and Lord Darcy and HugeLunatic for being the source of all my formal TXMT knowledge.
Other Crap: Requires Open For Business. Requires Nightlife for Vampire state, Pets for Werewolf state, and Apartment Life for witch state. (They can also be Zombies which requires Uni, but there's no separate texture for that.) Witch life states will give you some trouble if you have Squinge's No Outfit Change on Alignment Change hack; in testing, Serviette got a normal fleshy head under her robot head. Not attractive. Either don't teach your Servos magic or skip that hack. Not included but heartily recommended (especially for those with Seasons as well as OFB) is Dolphin26's Waterproof Servos, because it's only funny the first time. You may also be interested in Paladin's Servo objects at Sim Wardrobe (under Sims 2/Objects/Robots), although they're not so Medieval-looking.
Yeah, okay, that's everything.

GAMBITSOBSESSION'S UNINITIALIZED SERVOS
Available on GoS for quite a few of the default replacement androgynous Servos out there, including mine! Not a direct link, but a link to the applicable thread.
Wanna help me feed my cats?
In case you feel like dropping me a buck or two, should you have a buck or two to spare. Donors get two things at the moment: a) a link to the Super Secret Cat Gallery, full of pictures of the cats you'll be feeding, updated sporadically when the cats do something photogenic and I'm fast enough on the trigger to catch it, and b) a link to the list of content I have done-but-not-screencapped, nearly done, partly done, or in the planning stages, and the option to suggest what ought to be in the next batch of things I focus on.

Date: 2010-06-30 04:37 pm (UTC)... What is it with Servos and teenagers? Serviette there isn't so bad, but my male Servo actually recently married his ACR'd teenage sweetheart. Who has romance as a secondary aspiration and has crapped out several kids that are in no way his.
I thought of Tig's tunicpants mesh first because it's a good length and all one group. I can make arguments both ways for sleeves, but it was actually really common to wear a short-sleeved tunic (or dress) with a long-sleeved shirt underneath. I dunno, you're the one who's good with the meshes. *grins* I don't know if you'd need to use that female dress to start with, though-- there are some long base-game dresses that would be very versatile-- since the androgynous body doesn't really have a defined bustline, it's basically a matter of adding a long simple skirt starting at the waist. Also the long base-game meshes are already all one group, so that's a headache saved.
Wouldn't it be easier to build them as custom meshes, so it's easier to check them in Body Shop, and then make them into Servo defaults? The androgyne Servos fit the AF body (er, the neck of the mesh fits the AF head rather than the AM head), so these would basically be AF meshes-- from there it's a simple default replacement job to make them the Servo formalwear meshes, too. I'm probably not explaining myself very clearly because I am just about to go crash, but Servo's body is basically an NPC outfit. Nothing arcane about it.

Date: 2010-06-30 09:26 pm (UTC)Ah right. Lol I'm not so bad at them I guess (I'm a bit of a perfectionist tbh lol). It's no problem for a custom mesh to have groups but I think the servo default requires just the one. Yeah, there are, but a lot of maxis dresses are mapped weirdly lol.
Yeah, you're probably right there lol. Servos don't need morphs though and custom meshes do lol. I can't guarantee that I'll be able to make them suitably androgynous but I'll have a go in a few weeks (got a birthday coming up very very shortly, plus a bunch of stuff to unpack [been living here around 9 months now and the work on my room is only just finished], and I have annoying medical assessments and shit to do..ugh).

Date: 2010-07-01 12:31 am (UTC)Right, most NPC meshes only have one group, I do know that. Servos don't need morphs, but I don't think it'd hurt to have them-- it'd look a bit weird, since they can get fat (although you can't get 'em pregnant except with Boolprop).
What about lopping apart the Maxis gown ZoeJ uses here? I admit I don't like the things on the arms, but the skirt is long and simple and the whole thing doesn't seem to be mapped in any weird way.
There's no rush-- unpacking takes time, and birthdays are important. So's medical stuff. Servos can wait.

Date: 2010-07-29 09:36 pm (UTC)The only awkward thing about using it as a default (wasn't sure if you wanted that for male or female servos?) is that the clothnig texture will have to be pasted on top of the servo 'skin' .
no subject
Date: 2010-07-30 02:20 am (UTC)Um, either-or? I haven't found a long dress on an androgynous female-necked mesh yet (or one for a male-necked mesh, but I know the Servos use female necks), so it could be used for both easily enough. And I knew it'd have to be a full-white alpha, basically-- that's how regular Servo formalwear works. I also know I'm going to have to double the image size if I want to keep my woodgrain as detailed as it is, but... again, totally knew that going in.
I totally appreciate this. I have plans. ... Plans I won't have time for until September, but I have them anyway.

Date: 2010-07-30 03:38 pm (UTC)I'm still working on the long formal dress (I had to replace the boobs/top half because I couldn't flatten them lol, so gotta attach the top part to the bottom and fix the UV map). When I've finished that I'll stick that in the default for females and the other one in for males.
As I already made the package files for the custom versions, I may as well go and stick maxis feet on those and finish them off lol.
I have summer secret santa plans at the moment (and a ton of spin off plans since I found I'm not too bad at age converting lol).

Date: 2010-07-30 03:48 pm (UTC)Ahem.
No worries! I'm staring at some HP hair and wondering why the hell I put hers off to so near the end of my list-- her Roman mesh has SEVEN groups per age. And I can't black out any of them. ANYway, age conversions will make you a very popular girl! (Especially with morphs. Everybody loves a morph.)

Date: 2010-07-30 04:12 pm (UTC)Haha yeah I have some odd fantasy outfits (been trying to separate medieval/fantasy and ordinary clothes out to so I can townify stuff for my medieval hood).
Ah HP hairs and the layers, almost as bad as older nouk meshes.
Ha yeah, the female ones are trickier though, adult male > teen male ones require barely any shifting at all and I'm still a little uncomfy moving things by hand because I don't trust myself not to break something lol
Sneak peak at long formal mesh... http://tinyurl.com/2wgzafd

Date: 2010-07-30 08:00 pm (UTC)Yeah, I need to cull a bunch of stuff, but I almost can't-- I feel like I have to MAKE a bunch of stuff before I can ditch the stuff I have that I'm not really super happy with anymore.
OH GOD Gaius was so much worse than Roman. So. Much. Worse. I just. ELEVEN layers per age? Trick that shit, I made templates. I'll back it out in SimPE. (At least with Nouk, some of those layers are like the goggles and do nothing.)
*nodnods* I can totally understand that. But it's worth it, it really is, especially in the neck and shoulders-- a lot of necklace accessories made for teens sink into the collarbones of straight adult-teen conversion meshes. That just looks uncomfortable.
That? Looks seriously awesome. I'm all excited! Servos, flat-chested girls, boys dressed as girls... Well, maybe not that, yet... (I totally cherish a hope of manly Medieval clothes on female androgyne meshes and women's gowns on male androgyne meshes. For story purposes, along the lines of 'girl lies about her gender, joins army, is awesome' or 'widow does not want her baby son to ever be conscripted as a soldier, raises him as a girl,' that sort of thing.)
