When I was originally planning Hat's Almighty Comeback, it was going to be Twelve Days of Christmas themed. I was gonna start on December 24th and end on January 6th and there would be themes and this? This was gonna be my Ultimate Post, because in many traditions, Christmas gifts aren't given until January 6th, Epiphany, because that's when Yeshua ben Yusuf got his presents, so that's why you have to wait, too, Little Timmy.

Buuuuuut life happened and I totally missed the sixth. These gifts are officially late.

For humans! For Sims it's fine, whatever their yearly gift-giving holiday is, they have it every twenty days.

So they should have some goddamn toys.

The entire rest of this post's images are all swatches.

So Buy Mode Blitz is what I call this massive thing I'm doing that's... going through Buy Mode, finding the objects that don't have any, good, or any good retextures, and gussying them up so that I either start using them or start enjoying using them more. Absolutely I had to hit up my toys with that.

I do not keep deco toys in my game unless I'm hoping to do something else with them. Functional or bust.

In this post: All of these!

Natrobo's Petit Clown comes in 82 Pooklet Project Mayhem Naturals, Aelia Autumn, and CuriousB Any Color You Like actions over Magpie's linen texture. Though most of the outfits are motley, split down the middle, the "main" color (IE, the color the file is named for) is on the Petit Clown's left side and hat. Motley was chosen mostly for contrast and mostly using color combinations I've used before (Du Lac or chausses-and-garters), and bows and shoes for how well they worked with the base and motley colors.

Hair colors are Project Mayhem naturals (no grays), eye colors are Shrapnel, Brisance, Olive, Adonis, Dove, Dusk, and Caramel, while "skintones" include Depth Charge, Safety Fuse, Incendiary, Sand, Volatile, and Oyster-- and, for an unbiased mix I just slapped them down in those orders and then repeated the patterns. I was determined not to repeat the unthinking "I'll just use my 8 Linen palette!" mistake from my NDN dolls, which led to 82 dolls with very light-leaning skintones.

This is not by any means a traditional or historically accurate clown; I was trying to split the difference between a jester and a clown and still come down on the side of 'appealing toy,' because I don't know about you, but I need more toys in my Sim kids' lives. Therefore everything has been shaded within an inch of its life, the tiny dot mouth was replaced with a hand-drawn smile, and the nose is skin-colored instead of red.

Also! This is a VERY OLD mesh and while I think I have a better handle, now, on how to recolor a teddy bear clone so the worn/dirty state shows up... uh, Natrobo did not include a worn/dirty state. So I don't know if these never ever get worn or if they're someday suddenly going to turn into a teddy-bear-textured clown.

File included is my working file, which in this case is quartertile-enabled and given correct placement on OFB shelves.

Natrobo's rabbit toy (is not what it sounds like!) is cloned from the OFB Pet Brick, and has been given 32 fluffy recolors in vaguely-natural Pooklet Project Mayhem natural, Aelia Autumn, and CuriousB Any Color You Like actions over a seamless fur texture by Commentnation. I stuck with Natrobo-style simple dot-textures on the eyes because...

Listen. This is not an anatomically correct rabbit. (Though I left the nose self-colored instead of pink or black because rabbits don't have bare predator noses.) This is an oval with some bits attached. It's a cuddly toy that provides no "educational value" (skilling) and is just for fun-- and it's small enough that it's plausible it isn't an expensive furry toy-- it could've been made from the leftover scraps from making a fur-lined cape or something.

But it's a clever use of the Pet Brick base, and I don't know about your Sims, but my Sims aren't allowed to have deco toys. If you can't play with it, then what even is the point?

It's also... not high-poly, but it is 1080 polys for a tiny one-tile object. Lotsa curves on this bun, mostly in the ears.

Despite the simplicity of the mesh and the fact that the textures were never going to look GREAT, I did spend some quality time with the Warp, Dodge, and Burn tools, trying to give Natrobo's rabbit a little more dimension.

File included is my working file, which in this case is quartertile-enabled.

here they come, here they come (here they come, here they come) toy box toys on parade...

... it limps but you get the idea. I have revisited my Buyable Toybox Toys to throw a mess of recolors on them!

1. ATS Toy Shop Top in 20 Pooklet Project Mayhem naturals over a mesquite cutting board texture

2. Basegame toybox pony (no spots or saddle) in 20 Pooklet Project Mayhem naturals over edited original textures

3. Bienchen/Sim2Me toybox pony in 20 Pooklet Project Mayhem naturals over the original textures

4. Castaway Stories canoe in 20 Pooklet Project Mayhem naturals over Piggi Wood 03

5. Castaway Stories jaguar in 20 Pooklet Project Mayhem naturals over Piggi Wood 03 and a slightly-edited CS face: version one, 'Is That A Lion Or A Dog Or A Wolf?' (IE, plain).

6. Castaway Stories jaguar in two Pooklet Project Mayhem naturals over Piggi Wood 03 and a slightly-edited CS face: version two, 'Look It's A Tiger!' (striped. Yes, in all 20 colors)

7. TSM Dragon in 20 Pooklet Project Mayhem natural colors (solid stained) and 62 CuriousB Any Color You Like and Aelia Autumn combo colors (gaily painted) over edited original textures

8. TSM Horse in 20 Pooklet Project Mayhem naturals (with randomly-selected CuriousB Any Color You Like and Aelia Autumn accents) over edited original textures

9. TSM Ship in 20 Pooklet Project Mayhem naturals (with flags in randomly-selected CuriousB ACYL or Aelia Autumn colors) over the original textures

10. TSM Unicorn in 20 Pooklet Project Mayhem natural actions over edited original textures (there were two blobby bits that I did my best to turn into woodgrain)

Are these pieces historically accurate? As I often say, 'meh?' Most of them are a bit late or a bit realistic, though the Castaway Stories toys aren't so bad-- particularly the jaguar, which is about as similar to any living animal as your average bestiary full of crocodiles with man-faces. (If anything, it's a little TOO close to an actual tiger, because I have seen tigers before.) On the other hand, I'm still using my lifespan mod so my Sim kids still have time to play, so... kids gotta have toys.

But totally case-by-case?

The ATS top is fine, mostly-- tops are among the oldest recognizable toys found in archaeological digs; the oldest one on Wikipedia's page about tops is from Egypt under Roman rule, from the first-to-third century CE. This particular top would require a good lathe.

The toybox pony isn't great but it also isn't bad; it almost looks a little too much like the actual animal to work for the Middle Ages, but ponies were more familiar animals to the average person so that still works for me.

Beinchen's pony, however, is a little too cartoony but what the heck I recolored it anyway, let's have some variety around here.

The CS canoe is... you know, fine, generally, the dugout-ness of it isn't especially European in full-scale but as a toy it's fine. The CS jaguar, on the other hand, is actually pretty Medieval, despite his nose looking maybe a little Aztec-art, and the awkward tiger stripes only ADD to the 'I have heard of this animal' look.

The TSM dragon is... listen, I'm not gonna say a Medieval woodcarver couldn't have carved such a cool dragon, but you probably wouldn't give it to the average kid to chew on. I don't know what's going on with the TSM horse's legs but it's your third horse option and the only horse with tack this time around. The TSM ship was designed by someone who once saw a ship and really liked it but couldn't remember all the pertinent details, so it says more about your toymaker than your game's period.

And finally the TSM Unicorn is... on the one hand, it's exactly like the dragon in that it's a really nice carving that only the richest or luckiest kids would get to play with, with the odd bonus of looking more like a horse than the TSM toy horse does. On the other hand? I'm gonna be totally honest with you here, the Medieval unicorn is very different from today's depictions of Dainty Horse With Horn (which is what this toy depicts). A Medieval unicorn had a body and legs like a deer, with the feathers and head of a horse, the tail of a lion, the horn of a narwhal, and the front-facing eyes of a predator. It was a weirdly consistently-depicted animal.

But hey, if your game uses Frac's Dragonslave Unicorns, or Sun & Moon Livestock Unicorns, the TSM unicorn doesn't do a half-bad job providing your Sim kids with similar-enough toy versions of those!

Yes that's all one .zip file. No I'm not even a little sorry.

Super extra bonus: Some of these recolors work with Sun & Moon's new Toymaking Station! Frac updated my meshes so if you have hers, ditch mine, but... the recolors! The toy carving!

Time for some toddler toys! The ATS Creative Toy 004, Drums, comes in 20 Pooklet Project Mayhem naturals...

20 Aelia Autumn...

And 42 CuriousB Any Color You like actions for a grand total of 82 colors.

I used Piggi's Wood 01...

Sunni's Wizard's Tower Gold metal (with some shading by me, on the cymbal)...

... And the same drum head and string bits as on Atavera's Conga Drums. File included is my working file, which in this case is quartertile-enabled and given correct placement on OFB shelves.

Download!

Around The Sims Creative Toy 006, Pots and Pans (and a spoon to bang with) comes in selected Sunni Wizard's Tower metals, gently shaded. I don't know the official names of anything (except Brass is gold and Bright is silver), so filenames are sort of vaguely descriptive. This image shows the toy under indoor lighting...

... And this one is outdoor lighting. I did not fiddle with the envcube; these look VERY different outside and inside. File included is my working file, which in this case is quartertile-enabled and given correct placement on OFB shelves.

Download!

Around The Sims Creative Toy 005, a Xylophone, comes in 20 Pooklet Project Mayhem recolors over Piggi Wood 01, and Sunni's Wizard's Tower gold on the brass tubes seen above...

... and on the probably-tin tubes, the original ATS textures, just brightened up a smidge. File included is my working file, which in this case is quartertile-enabled and given correct placement on OFB shelves.

-Maylin-'s Athelyna xylophone comes in 20 Pooklet Project Mayhem Naturals woods, with the original string/twine textures and not-quite-random colors on the jester-hammer's hat selected from Aelia Autumn and CuriousB Any Color You Like actions. The Jester's new face was mouse-drawn by me, and is featured on Piggi Wood 03 in alternating Incendiary and Depth Charge.

Also the face turned out really cute, so I'm making you look at it before I give you the download link.

Ja's Alice Body-skill-building toddler toy uses the mesh of the Bon Voyage crab and comes in twelve more-or-less natural colors. Do they all belong to this species of crab? No. ... Probably. Crabs can change color. But ARE they all actual colors real live crabs come in? Yes. Yes they are.

Is it silly to have a body-skill building toy for toddlers? ... I mean considering my three-year-old niece walks across my legs like a balance beam and is perfectly capable of tipping over a storage ottoman full of ten pounds of paper and an IRON, yes, yes it is, it is DANGEROUS to have strong toddlers. (My five-year-old nephew likes to push the screens out of the front windows and climb out onto the roof. I am starting to understand why the Victorians kept laudanum in the nursery.)

But maybe you want that. Get a jump on those college scholarships. If you do, hey! Crabs come in decorator colors.

Also, feel free to use these textures as defaults for the Bon Voyage crab.

Ja's Alice Frying Pan Cooking Toy and Stock Pot Cleaning Toy for toddlers come in the same six Sunni Wizard's Tower metals as the ATS2 pots-and-pans creativity toy. Included is Ja's necessary placeholder object. These two are mapped the same and I would've texture-referenced them if I knew how... but also the textures are only 256x256 so. No big. File included is my working file, which in this case is quartertile-enabled and given correct placement on OFB shelves.

Moving away from toddler-only toys, K8's Parsimonious Mere Folly activity table requires Free Time and comes in 20 Pooklet Project Mayhem Naturals over the Piggi Wood 03/SDA Castle Kitchen wood blend I'm becoming so fond of. There is also some rope-carving detail from the original table and, because the tabletop is actually made of four rotated tiles, an attempt at mitering.

The shapes involved in this table are what I'd consider reasonably-Medieval, although the concept really isn't-- a specific piece of furniture for the toddlers and children to sit and play with blocks or scrawl on paper? What's wrong with the floor? But it's a nice educational toy-- blocks build logic, drawing builds creativity--where your little Sim children can skill-build AND socialize with their siblings. Activity tables are too useful not to have one or two hanging around.

Plus, since this IS a plain wood recolor, later eras might find this piece useful, too. I mean, MY game is pre-industrial, most of my Sim kids are gonna be in their 'stations' for life, and their kids after them. But a VICTORIAN Sim kid might be expected to advance their place in the world by bettering themselves, so, yeah, grind those skills, kiddo.

Lmhwjs (or... LMHWJS, at the beginning of a sentence? I don't know if it's a handle or an acronym) made a fantastic simple activity table, and I've retextured it with Piggi Wood 03 in 20 Pooklet Project Mayhem naturals. Because it seemed a little bare, I added some carving or painting (okay it's an embroidery pattern but I liked it), and now it's just a nice sturdy thing to help keep your tiniest sims occupied.

This is... really not period? And if it were, given the whiteness of the paper, it'd be something for wealthy children or children who lived in a wealthy area (or a culture where they were expected to learn to write. Nice white linen rag paper is expensive compared to using a stylus and wax tablet... but it's cheaper than your two year old smearing red-dyed beeswax scooped out of the tablet onto every available surface). The blocks, of course, are reasonably period. That said, it's something fun for toddlers and children to do, and something they can do together.

Builds logic and creativity, increases fun and social, makes Sim siblings like each other-- what's not to love?

AND FINALLY!

The ATS Ikea Trogen Toybox comes in 20 Pooklet Project Mayhem natural actions over I think Piggi Wood 01-- it was one of the first things I recolored as a part of Buy Mode Blitz, and as such it's a little darker than I ultimately decided I liked my wood tones.

Is it historically accurate? Meh. But it's historically adequate, anyway, and sometimes that's all you really need.

Be warned, a toybox AND buyable toybox toys on the same lot often result in your schmancy non-default toys being stuffed into the toybox, never to return-- especially around maids, butlers, and servos!

Wanna help me feed my cats?

In case you feel like dropping me a buck or two, should you have a buck or two to spare. Donors get two things at the moment: a) a link to the Super Secret Cat Gallery, full of pictures of the cats you'll be feeding, updated sporadically when the cats do something photogenic and I'm fast enough on the trigger to catch it, and b) a link to the list of content I have done-but-not-screencapped, nearly done, partly done, or in the planning stages, and the option to suggest what ought to be in the next batch of things I focus on.

Hi! Great to see you back. You have shared so many useful things over the years.

I have been looking at these toys, and snagging some, but the Lmhwjs file is weird. The link lists no title for the file, and when I go to download, the file keeps changing its name - and none of the names look like your usual setup. I think something needs fixing.

Will check back later!

I found a number of files (here and elsewhere) having the same problem. I downloaded one, and the file itself seems fine once you have it.

Must be something to do with SFS. :)
