Okay, so I really started this project for a G-rated Chris Hatch religion mod I've been working on with Larky over on GoS. (Larky did the hard work.) And in the middle of getting the fiddly bits done, my life exploded. These things happen. But I'm ready now, so I have some goodies for you this fine morning!

Nothing is working! SEND IN THE NUNS!
Okay, Mel Brooks aside, let's jump right in and arrange this like a content dump, which means I'm gonna do credits and thanks right here.
Praise be unto Amaryll, Aquilegia, Berg, Beryllium, Cynnix, and FantasyRogue for meshes (especially Cynnix, who made a couple meshes by request), Dicreasy for a pregmorph adjustment, Aquilegia, Io, FR, Pooklet, Iamliz13, Ja, Maxis, and somebody whose ribbing ended up on google for textures, CuriousB and Pooklet for color actions, Marja for the default-replacing tutorial, Morganna for telling me that yes, that was the tutorial I wanted, and Lyn and Em for invaluable moral support. The policy on these is pretty simple-- do whatever you want except paysites, because they involve Pooklet's color actions. (CuriousB's policy may say no paysites, too, I forget.)
Everything is compressorized, because Body Shop eats black and white for breakfast and I didn't want you to get stuck with crunchy textures. Delete your cache files before starting your game.
Okay, here we go!

Contemporary Veil, White
Berg's Victoria Hair/Pooklet and Aquilegia textures/Pooklet's actions
1356 Polys
Young Adult through Elder
Female
So, starting with contemporary veils, no wimples or toques or anything. This isn't the only sort of veil a modern nun might wear, but this is the mesh I had. Berg's Victoria hair even has a very simple bun, rather than the Celebration Stuff's more elaborate updo. These veils follow my usual binning pattern, so it's easy for you to change them around if you want to. The veil is in Time Bomb, a nice bright white.

And in CuriousB's Jet. Okay, so the thing about nuns' veils is that they sometimes move with the times as far as fashion goes. The point isn't always to wear an elaborate headdress but to modestly cover the hair. And since 1964, when the Vatican lifted restrictions on whether or not nuns ALWAYS had to wear habits, if you just added a simple veil like these to modest, skirted clothes in whatever colors your convent uses (I've seen royal blue and tan as well as black, white, and gray), you've got a pretty good idea of what a lot of modern sisters might wear to both set themselves apart from the crowd and still wear more contemporary clothes.

2272 Polys
Young Adult through Elder
Female
And here we have the first of the habits! This one will work from 1964 right on up to today. There's nothing in it you couldn't find at your local department store, but all put together-- especially with a veil-- it's pretty obviously a nun. Cynnix made this mesh for me by slimming down the Basegame Nanny until she could pass as an adult, too, adding loafers from a Free Time outfit, and slapping a pregmorph on there. ... Not that there should be a need for a pregmorph, but I'm not gonna tell you how to play your own game. Use the black recolor for widows, even. They're also available for Casual, Formal, and Outerwear.

You can of course pair any habit and veil you like. This is the first of the more obviously nun-like habits-- although granted, the white recolors could work for Medieval nobility. Like any hair that doesn't have any hair showing, I'm offering this one in two variations-- Custom, which will show up in your Custom bin (and be unavailable if you want your Sims to have their hair showing in the bathtub) and Multi, which will show up in all the color bins in-game (but none of them in Body Shop). You can choose only one, so choose wisely.

I will admit right now, the necks on the actual habits are VERY simple; I just got 'em as high as I could get 'em while still keeping an even hem. The habit you choose will cover that completely. These habits have a very simple depiction of that classic loose, flowy look, with the long tabard in front and back. Like the Nanny Loafers habit, they've got all morphs and are available for Casual, Formal, and Outerwear.

I do like the wimple better on the Noble veil, but the drape of the veil is really nice on this one-- it doesn't have any starch, so it works well for a poorer or simply less formal order. Both sets of veils are available in the same color combinations, and they're mapped the same-- you could texture-reference them if you really wanted to. As usual, you can get this veil in Custom or Multi binning flavors.

And finally, a 100% period habit! Due to the poulaines, this one won't really work outside the Middle Ages (which of course lasted from about 400 to about 1500, so you've got some wiggle-room there). Cynnix very generously made this mesh for me, and I particularly like it for nuns because why would they tailor their sleeves to be skintight? The wide sleeves are more practical, even if Sims never roll up their sleeves to weed the garden or wash a baby. These have all morphs, and are available for Casual, Formal, and Outerwear.

Mrs. Crumplebottom default, Medieval habit
I default-replaced an NPC hair and outfit! NINE TIMES! It was harrowing! Okay, okay, so, the above sisters are clearly not Mrs. Crumplebottom. They're three random-ish CAS Sims who volunteered for a modeling job. In each picture, the black habit is on an Elder Sim, the white is on an Adult Sim, and the gray is on a fat Adult Sim. They're wearing exactly what you can choose from for your Mrs Crumplebottom defaults. Of which there are nine. Each default is in its own file, so it's easy to choose one... but like Immortal Highlanders and black widow spiders, THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE. (I also wasn't smart enough to separate out the habits and veils. If you want to lop 'em up to do that, feel free.)
I want to do the Social Worker this way, too, but I can't figure out how to change her hair without breaking the Maxis French braid for anyone who's using it as-is. Without breaking recolors of it, sure, no problem, but not so much the actual hair.

(Also, what are you trying to do with the Maxis French Braid hair? Does the Social Worker use the regular Maxis French braid? Or does she use a hidden version of the file?)
no subject
Date: 2013-06-26 04:11 pm (UTC)If you want PSDs for recoloring and yet keeping shadows nice, let me know, I do have them. I did all the grays and just picked the ones I liked best, but combinations of black and white, white and gray, gray and black, white and blue, and tan and white are all totally realistic, and of all the people in the Simming world who might need multiple distinct habits for their Sim nuns, you're way up at the top of the list.
As far as I can tell, the Social Worker uses the regular French Braid hair, not a hidden recolor. I can default the hair, that's not an issue, and I can do it without breaking custom recolors, but I can't do it without inconveniencing people who have their Sims already in the regular French Braid rather than a custom recolor. ... Or who are using Aquilegia's default replacements.

Revenge is sweet.
I think between your nuns and Andavri's I'm set for now, but thank you for offering! :D I can always use a few more options knocking around. Any black outfit that I can designate as "nun" frees up another black outfit for a potential mourning outfit.
As for the Social Worker hair ... hmm. Well, on the plus side, no matter what you do, you can get it to play nicely (sort of) with Aquilegia's texture defaults by just making sure yours loads last. I've made a few hair defaults and used them in conjunction with Aquilegia's and Ja's defaults successfully by doing that. I get my replacement for that particular hair and their defaults for the rest of the hair.
But for your other problem ... I'm not sure it can be solved. If the Social Worker is using a regular hair ... you can only default replace what's there. However, I seem to remember looking at some of Sunni's defaults and finding that she used rather interesting ways to get the game to "look here, not there." Unfortunately I can't find/remember what it was I looked at that was interesting. I'll keep hunting when I don't have an update to write and report back later. ;)

Date: 2013-06-27 06:05 am (UTC)In fairness, he hadn't seen Sleepy Hollow, so he didn't know about Tim Burton's fondness for liberally spraying Johnny Depp with almost-realistically-colored blood.
I think what I'm going to have to do with the Social Worker hair is follow Marja's tutorial, default out the french braid, and make a base-game-pinned texture-referenced recolor for those who don't use Mel9's all-ages version or my Pooklet'd recolor of the all-ages version. That should work fine, there's a difference between the way Marja's default thing works and the way texture defaults work, but there might be load order issues if the Social Worker default loads before Aquilegia's texture defaults.
Tis deep magic, and I am but a novice.

Date: 2017-01-01 03:12 pm (UTC)Change social worker hair without overriding the default braid
Date: 2017-07-12 05:49 pm (UTC)Love all of your stuff! I'm a long time lurker.
I just wanted to let you know that there's now a way to replace the social worker (or really any other) NPC's hair/clothes without replacing the actual basegame hair/clothes that it draws from. It's basically the same as what Rugrat0ne and CelestialSpider at PBK did to create their Hula Zombie defaults (http://www.medievalsims.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=74&t=8495). Not sure if you've seen them, but they're awesome!
Basically, you have to clone the NPC's object file in Object Workshop (without changing the group numbers, so it replaces the original), edit the 3DIRs within, and make them reference different property sets. It's just like a normal default replacement, except instead of replacing Resource Nodes, SHPE files, and TXMTs, you're replacing the property sets. Sounds kind of scary to mess around with global object files, I know, but I've been testing this process for a while, and haven't experienced any glitches yet. (Well, at least not anything I couldn't fix with common sense troubleshooting.)
I'm planning on posting a full tutorial to my simblr soon, but for now, I finished an override for the social worker that forces her to wear hairhathip instead of the default braid. I'm pretty sure if you open up the npc override file and take a look at what I did, how I did it should be pretty clear. (http://simfileshare.net/download/272870/)
Best,
CedanyBlee
