I know THAT feeling. And I do try to aim for versatile hair. I also try to aim for a Downloads folder under 8 gigs, 7 if I can manage it, so I do a lot of looking at my hairs and going "I will never use this," "I don't like this one anymore," "There are lower-poly hairs that have similar styles," and "I will never use this but I can't bear to part with it."

I've been sorting clothes by expansion lately, too-- sticking my Asian and Castaway clothes to Bon Voyage and my vampire-and-Gypsy-specific clothes to Nightlife and my 'this outfit is just leaves' clothes to Seasons. That's kind of rocking my socks, actually-- it makes it a LOT easier to find what I'm looking for, what with all the clothing hiders I have, and I no longer have blobs of hakamas and grass skirts inbetween my nice Medieval clothes. I'm seriously considering doing the same to hair.
