And this, I think, catches me up with 'all my downloads what are not Hair Dumps.' Which is very exciting but let me once again note for a number of helpful anons:
I AM NOT RE-UPLOADING MISSING HAIRS TO MEDIAFIRE AT THIS TIME.
If you spot a missing hair in a hair dump you want to download, please check my Sims File Share Dread Hair Folder. If you have already looked in that folder and just want to let me know Mediafire has done a thing, thank you, that's fine. If you can't find the hair in the SFS folder, PLEASE let me know, I uploaded them all at once and sometimes SFS's X marks for did-not-upload look a lot like their check marks for uploaded-fine and I may have missed some on the hairs.
The hair dumps are going to be miserable to re-code and I am not looking forward to doing it. Or finding all the images and re-uploading them. Please bear with me as I put that one off as long as possible, possibly after I fix my own picspam posts AND my doll blog images. (I will not cancel my photobucket subscription until I have it all fixed; get a Photobucket Embed Fix extension for your browser or take heart that I keep the swatches in the downloads.)
I promised news, though, right?
The news is, MY DESKTOP IS UP AND RUNNING AGAIN!
Why has this taken so long? Stars not in position, mostly. Mostly. There was the finger thing in May, and in June my old desk chair BROKE-- the plate that attaches the seat to the pole just bent, damn near pitched me onto the floor. Turns out, if I have to sit my not-inconsiderable self at the computer with a 70-lb kid on either thigh, I need to pay good money for a big-and-tall computer chair. (I have not bought one of those. Instead I bought a swivel dining chair from Marshall's for $80, and will save up to drop real cash on a mighty throne... later. It's kind of nice, actually, just having the swivel?)
Then there was-- okay I've been reorganizing and cleaning the home office like a lot because the desktop sits in a computer armoire, with the monitor boosted right to my sit-up-straight head height and my view around the monitor is the interior of the armoire. The laptop, when it's out in the office, sits on one of those Tablemate adjustable couch-desk things? (Got it for travel, works great for that.) So I sit on my couch and compute from there. But it's a laptop, so if I have the screen at a nice height, the keyboard is WAY too high. Sitting on the couch, looking out into the office over the laptop monitor, it's...
... ooooh it's easy to see where I skimp on the dusting or have a Corner of Shame.
So yeah that took a lot of spoons that I should've used for desktop repair, but on the other hand my office is now the cleanest, nicest room in the house.
What actually got my butt in gear was my laptop having an issue where it worked fine in Safe Mode, but crashed if started normally... or if started in Safe Mode with Networking. So THAT led to a massive panicked backup of everything I'd missed on the desktop hard drive (at that point still safe in its enclosure) and what little I keep on the laptop.
The laptop is fine, it needed Disk Check run and it repaired itself.
But after it did that, I was still full of executive function (... provided by the adrenaline rush of 'I can't have ZERO functional computers!') so I opened up the armoire and the hard drive enclosure, reassembled this ancient lumbering beast, and tried every single repair option on every single rescue disk I had.
None of the straight-up repair options I tried worked, which was really frustrating, so I had to reformat and reinstall everything. This was... fun, because the last time I had to install Vista to a new hard drive, Windows Vista was still supported by Microsoft. So yeah getting updates took jumping through a LOT of hoops. This, though, was exactly as baby-steps as I needed, without being 'slog through the Microsoft Update Catalog and download anything that doesn't say it's been replaced by some later update.' Also it turns out that installing the drivers for your graphics card and keyboard and such tends to go a lot better if you label those drivers intelligently in your passport drive. I have written myself instructions for a full reinstall of Vista, if I have to reinstall again after another five or six years of daily use.
(Seriously, I love this box. It was a 30th birthday present from my mother, and what serious issues have I had over the past twelve years? A hard drive failure, which let me learn how to replace a hard drive and also add RAM, and the startup failure thing that taught me how to use a hard drive enclosure and also that there's a battery in the motherboard that needs periodic replacing.)
Future computing plans include: finally getting the last gig of RAM my motherboard can handle, looking into uninterruptible power supplies, getting a bigger passport drive (my 500gb one I've had for at least a decade is straining at the metaphorical seams), and maybe looking into a second hard drive just cos... I have the physical space and I've kind of always wanted to? Oh and fishing the hard drive out of Mom's old desktop (which is very dead) and seeing if I can rescue some of the data on that. (Maybe. I know it has SecuRom on it, I'll have to see if that's safe for the destination machine.)
Reinstalling Sims 2 and all its related programs took... uh, days. Longer than it should've, but I have written myself an install guide for all that, too, just in case. Importantly, to run in Windowed Mode, the thing to add to your shortcut's target is not "-w" but " -w". Space-dash-doubleyew. The space is vitally important and I visited about sixteen different results for "won't run in windowed mode" before someone said, "You're remembering the space, right?"
I was not remembering the space.
Is my full game up and running yet? Uh, not exactly. Okay so I keep two EA Games folders in My Documents, and correct the names when I want to run a particular variation: EA Games CREATE, which is all Body Shop content (and, you know, UI mods and stairs and the stuff I don't want to actually start the game without) and EA Games PLAY, which is everything I've made or downloaded. EA Games Create is for Body Shop, because Body Shop loads faster if I don't also ask it to load Buy, Build, pet breeds, random mods, so on and so forth.
And I may have gotten sucked into a couple of Body Shop projects (some to share, some just organization tweaks of my own).
Also I figure if I have to start fresh, it may be time for a ruthless content cull (is it culling when you're just... leaving it on the passport drive?) and to texture-reference and bundle up a WHOLE MESS of underwear.
Also I swear I've left an important message unanswered somewhere but I gotta go figure out where.
So!
