Home Is His Castle (48 mostly-maxis recolors of Buggybooz's Nooks & Niches)

So, when I saw Buggybooz's amazng Nooks and Niches and Folly Garden, I knew I had to put some of my favorite wall textures on there.

... "Some" turned out to be "forty-eight."

The really awesome thing about the Nooks and Niches is that there are approxinately five hojillion slaved meshes, and to recolor all you do is take a wall texture that tiles properly, recolor the master mesh, and boom, suddenly you have a host of amazing architectural details.

I actually have relatively few pictures for you, because... I barely know what I want to do yet. I just know what walls I want to do it with.



THe very first thing I did was yoink the textures from Paigeturner's Complete Castle Wall set over on Mod the Sims. See, I LOVE the Complete Castle Build set from the Store. You have no idea how much I love it. SO MUCH. But the one thing it really lacks is a good set of stairs in matching stone... and lo and behold there's Buggy's set with THREE different staircases. And honestly, I would be delighted if that's all you could do with this set.



Same textures, I know-- but grab Sunni's add-ons to the set and build yourself a hearth to be proud of.



Really, any of the big pieces can be a fireplace, with the right recolors and a few accessories (firewood, a bit of low fencing).



You can even make yourself the most kickass masoleum in the whole cemetery. We won't ask why you're airing out that coffin.

Okay let's get down to the important stuff, and then I'll throw you a Download link.

NO MESHES ARE INCLUDED. Not a single one. Go here and here and here and here to get meshes. Mix and match and keep the ones that work for your game, but I'm only including recolors.

I didn't make any of the textures, I just yoinked 'em out of my favorite walls. There'll be a big credits blob in a minute, but I just want to put that out there.

Not every texture works flawlessly with every mesh, either, particularly stairs and anything with baseboards. Still, you can do a lot of really awesome decorating, even if it takes a bit of fiddling.

I have to thank a whole list of people, including Buggybooz and Sunni for meshes, Quaxi for SimPE, N65, KHLVH, UK1967, Sherahbim, Druid, whoever made the Pirate Bay set at Parsimonious, Around The Sims, VitaSims, Paigeturner on MTS, and Shastakiss for their walls, and there are a bunch of right-out-of-the-game textures, too. I have to thank DJ for the Compressorizer, because otherwise these would be a lot larger than they needed to be (so clear your cache files), but for once I don't have to thank Lyn for making sure I had a working copy of Photoshop, because I didn't have to crack it open ONCE for this project. ... Except to make preview pics. And the swatch.

Wanna help me feed my cats?

In case you feel like dropping me a buck or two, should you have a buck or two to spare. Donors get two things at the moment: a) a link to the Super Secret Cat Gallery, full of pictures of the cats you'll be feeding, updated sporadically when the cats do something photogenic and I'm fast enough on the trigger to catch it, and b) a link to the list of content I have done-but-not-screencapped, nearly done, partly done, or in the planning stages, and the option to suggest what ought to be in the next batch of things I focus on.

You know Sunni is planning on repositing tons of other sets to the BB Niche? And we're encouraging more objects to be linked to it, so someday this is going to basically cover everything. ^^ Which you'll hear no complaints of from me. ;)

But, huzzah, castle walls! All those maxis walls! Now my list of recolors to make is halved! (I'm slowly going through my game and removing any walls I don't think I'll use or any that need a 'left' and a 'right' to tile properly. And then listing out which ones need BB Niche recolors. I stopped myself after the #60-something. This is a life-saver.)

I hear the Complete Castle Build Set is pretty wall-like in how you recolor it, too. You know, in case further slaving ideas are needed.

And I'm glad I saved you some work! That's always kind of a nice feeling, really, having something on your to-do list and then somebody else does it.

It is impossible to have too many recolors of this set. (You know there are false walls in it? As in, walls you can use to make courtyards that are enclosed but still get sunlight?)

Of course, I used it to build my royal castle, WITH courtyard (which is still being decorated, but the walls are there). It's a shame the lighting is so different for walls and objects, but it beats having a big gap there!

I've used the Store Complete Castle Build set (which apparently takes wall-shaped recolors too, so I wonder if it could be slaved to this set somehow) to build courtyards-- well, I build a half-wall to let light in, put full wall only on the tiles where the doors go, and cover the half-walls with that good thick stone of the Castle Set pillars. That's why stairs I could get my castle stone on excited me so damn much. (And I use the Sssinderblock and Latipsoh cinderblocks in Church buildings a lot, and UK1967 has a fence and gate that match his wall (which is only a little darker than Fay's Fieldstone), and although I have nowhere to use it yet, the ATS and VitaSims tiles look REALLY nice as the foreground and background of some of the larger arch niches.)

Hmm, I tried making some recolours of the castle build set a few weeks ago and the textures are decidedly not wall-shaped. The textures are weird though. I couldn't even figure out what the left half was for. I put a totally different texture on that half to test it out and it didn't show up anywhere!

I'll admit I haven't looked at the textures. Shastakiss said you could recolor the whole set with one texture or something like that, so it's entirely possible I just randomly inferred it was a wall-like texture. And that... is weird. It's not, like, the roof subset, is it? Some of those pieces have roofs.

Nope, the roof is on another texture. I believe there are three textures in total to recolour if you want all the pieces done.

More nooks 'n niches? Yes, please! I really have to start decorating some heavy-duty courtyards with these. I'm almost bummed that the last courtyards I did were before this set came out!

See, I didn't even try to put together any fancy gardens or anything, but I KNOW formal gardens would be an excellent use for these things. Million and one uses! I just see them and think 'kitchen! Mausoleum! Castle stairs omg! Because those are the immediate places my brain goes. But there will be pleasure gardens in my castle compound, so maybe I'll get to put 'em to use there.

Yay! These are fantastic. I do have a question, though -- I can't seem to find KHLVK or N65's websites/user pages, let alone their walls? I'm not familiar with either of them, and I'd appreciate if someone could at least point me at one of the sites either of them use? Either way, thank you! These retextures are gorgeous.

Well, I copied something down wrong, because KHLVK is actually KHLVH, and here's there MTS profile. N65 is Nengi65, who appears to have retired and taken down their uploads, which is a bummer I did not know about. They may still be available somewhere besides MTS.

Thanks for moar recolors of the niches! I just love the BB set so much. To confirm what has been mentioned, I am almost done with slaving Moune's Le Morvan set (which took quite a bit longer than expected because I had to remap everything). I've also slaved my hearths and chimneys (now with animated smoke) to match the BB set. I plan to share the finished items I have so far in about a week before moving on to other items. I'm trying to get as much build mode stuffs slaved as possible. I've got a list going of many more things to slave to the set, so I'll have a look at the Castle Set and see what can be done with it. If there are any other sets you can think of that should be slaved just let me know.

The only other meshes I can think of offhand that might benefit from being slaved to Buggy's goodies are Paladin's square pillar and pillar arch. Also, may I say, slaving more things to that set is an awesome idea.
