Hair Dump XI: The Long-Awaited Beard Dump
Beard Dump!
Oh my god okay, this was a WHIRLWIND of facial hair, you guys. Wait, lemme toss up the Hair Dump title card, because it's still useful here.
Behind the cut lurk twenty-six beards for your downloading pleasure.
Dump-format downloads inside the cut means boilerplate goes outside the cut-- and this time there is SPECIAL BEARD-DUMP boilerplate!
BEARD-DUMP SPECIAL: You can get your beards three ways: Unbinned, Binned, and Binned-and-Townie-Friendly. Unbinned is self-explanatory; all I did was correct the tooltips. Binning is a little special this time around.
Usually my binning follows the title card above, all nice and sifted into families. NOT THIS TIME. This time, each color is binned as its OWN family-- I swear I had a logical reason for this. Adults will keep their colors when they age up into elder... which means if you decide to give an adult a beard in his destined gray shade, when his hair goes gray, it'll match. It also means when a bearded adult ages up into elder, his beard will keep HIS color instead of choosing from one of four or five grays in the family randomly.
The second important thing to note is townie-enabling. After much debate, I did decide to townie-enable the mesh-less beards available to teenagers... but gray beards are only townie-enabled for elders, and colored beards are only townie-enabled for Teen (when available), Young Adult, and Elder. This is to prevent too much insanity when it comes to townies and NPCs spawning with mis-matched facial hair.
Townie-enabled facial hair will crop up between fifty and seventy-five percent of the time on new CAS or Body Shop Sims, NPCs, and of course townies, dormies, tourists, and the like. Usually it matches either well or passably, but sometimes (stubble, beards, and Synaptic Sim's sideburns all STACK) you may want to get a townie to a barber's chair. Boys will not randomly age up into stubble or full beards at the age of twelve.
I did NOT make new files for the binning and townie-enabling. You can pick and choose, but only between colors. I did think to include a guide with the downloads, but it's a text file (for ease of pasting if you want to change something), so remember not to actually put it in your downloads folder.
As-is, you can layer one stubble, one beard/mustache, and one set of Synaptic Sim's face fur muttonchops. I think it may be possible to at least add more layering capabilities to the non-meshed facial hair using this method, but I didn't think to try it before I started binning.
Okay, on to the usual boilerplate.
NO PAYSITES. Mesh creators' policies may vary, my policy says I want a cut (like that would ever happen), but Pooklet says no and these are Pooklet's actions. So no paysites.

(Also, to recolor easily, grab the Unbinned versions-- only black or multi-binned beards, stubble, makeup, and accessories will show up in Body Shop.)

Usually I do these things in alphabetical order, because that's just easier. This time, also because it's easier, I'm going to start off with the beard I did not name, because it seemed ridiculous to give five shades of stubble each their own cute, thematic names. You can see an example of each one above; the first four are right out of the game, and the fifth is on a thicker alpha by Treeag. Swatches are linked below. I also want to put a sort of caveat out there-- the lighter colors (Time Bomb, Primer, Volatile, and Grenade) kind of disappear on fair skintones until you get to the heavier stubble, and Comburent often looks... odd... on darker skintones.

This one is not actually a beard, but a hairy accessory. (I still binned and townie-enabled it.) That means you can layer it over other facial hair for various effects, which is a lot of fun. I'm not 100% sure I'll ever need such dramatic muttonchops in my game, but once I found them? I had to get them done in all the naturals. Maybe on some gruff and burly night watchman? The mesh is included, but you can see the original textures on Sims with hair here.

And now begins the point where I turn to TV Tropes for beard names. Captain Colorbeard is that trope where a character, often a pirate but sometimes a Viking (which is really just a specific sort of pirate) is called after the... color of their beard. Blackbeard, redbeard, graybeard. ... Bluebeard, although he doesn't really count, since 'serial murderer' doesn't overlap with 'pirate' in his case. This sounds piratical to us because of Captain Edward "Blackbeard" Teach and Oruc "Barbarossa" Reis. (Barbarossa being Italian for red beard.) However, Vikings would use terms like Redbeard or Blackbeard or Forkbeard as kennings, sort of formal nicknames. The Norse didn't really use last names all that much during the Viking Age, but a kenning like Redbeard or Whitehand or The Walker or The Red or Silvertongue. The -sson and -sdottir patronymic and the -jarson matronymic suffixes also count as kennings, not last names-- they weren't used to keep track of lineage so much as differentiate between Erik Svensson and Erik Larsson, so the right one would look up when you yelled.

Did you hear that from your mother? I did. It'll grow back thicker if you cut it or shave it; for me this was supposed to get me to cut my hair once in a while because Mom didn't like the natural look on me; for boys, apparently this is an incentive to shave that horrible patchy thing growing in on the face. "You should shave, sweetie, it'll grow back thicker." And sure enough, the longer he shaves, the thicker it grows back... because a) he finishes puberty, meaning the rest of those follicles wake up, and b) blunt-cut hairs appear thicker than naturally tapered ones. Which makes this a great beard for teenagers who are just getting to the point where shaving turns into an argument with Mom.

Yep, I did two textures each for the Santa and Father Time beards, for all your massive beard needs. And yes, it looks ridiculous on a man with a shaved head. But here it is anyway! I flattened out the contrast a lot to keep Nouk's waves from looking too shiny-- I wanted a natural wavy beard look, not a shiny nylon-fiber department store Santa look. When paired with a hair I retextured using Nouk's waves, this won't be a perfect match in terms of highs and lows, but it doesn't look half bad, either.

That's who this beard reminds me of. The name, in Discworld Latatian (dog Latin, for us) translates to, "We who are about to die don't want to."

I mentioned back on Four Score and Seven that I watched Gargoyles. Well. I did. And two of the beards on this list fit two of the characters fairly well. That makes two beards with Jonathan Frakes-related names, too. (A LOT of Star Trek actors were on that show; Jonathan Frakes was cast first, and suggested Marina Sirtis for another role. Michael Dorn was already in voice acting and easy to get; Brent Spiner's role was such a departure from Data I didn't know it was him. Avery Brooks, Colm Meany, Nichelle Nichols, LeVar Burton, and Kate Mulgrew all had roles... and the part of Oberon was written for Patrick Stewart, who really wanted it but had scheduling conflicts. So it went to Terrence Mann, instead.)

These are probably a lot harder to use than Maxis intended. It works better with hairs that already come over the ear than with hairs that only have one alpha layer, or that have a hairline alpha painted onto their scalp layer. I won't say it's useless cos it's not, but you can get some real funny-looking seams if you aren't careful.

If you stuck with me that long, congratulations! Now it's time for the Body Shop Image Gallery!
First and foremost, here are twenty randomly-rolled male Sims showing off their facial hair, or lack thereof, for those of you wondering how regularly townie-enabled beards roll up.
Starting with the mustachioed redhead at the upper right, we have:
Mustache, Van Dyke, Unlocked Thick, Face Fur & Soul Patch, Amish, Mustache, Stubble, Amish & Face Fur (these do NOT go well together, what with alphas and clipping), Beard, Beard, None, Beard, None, None, Stubble & Face Fur, Beard, None, None, None, Stubble & Face Fur. So, something like 60% of the time, your randomly-rolled men will end up with facial hair, at least if you download all 26 beards townie-enabled. Also, I think only maybe four of the twelve beards rolled up are the same color as the hair they rolled up with, but only the Incendiary Higitus Figitus beard paired with the Primer C'est Moi hair and the stack of differently-colored muttonchops and beard look particularly awkward, at least to me.
Here's my model, Merrick (made by my friend Lyn and then tweaked by me, cos he's got a neat face but Lyn likes larger eyes than I do). For my swatches above, I shaved his head so none of the beards were ever hidden by hair, and turned him into an old man so I could take my screenshots fairly quickly. I figured after all that, I kind of owed him a nice picture looking like himself.
And here's Merrick with a few variations, plus that random-rolled redheaded guy showing off a few more deliberate looks. Starting with the redhead, who is wearing my Traveler hair, Blow The Man Down, Nothing Special, and probably the Medium Stubble in Comburent, plus a Bon Voyage eyepatch because hey look, the face fur is a layerable accessory! Handy! Next is merrick wearing Determination and And I'm Okay in Safety Fuse, looking like Jesus. C'est Moi combines well with Blow The Man Down in Safety Fuse, and looks a little more groomed and less holy. On the bottom row, we start with Merrick in Father To His People and Devil You Know in Brisance, looking very much like a merry monarch; next to that, in Vast Improvement and With An English Accent as well as G-Knee's low bycocket, he just looks like a merry man, instead. And we close with Merrick in Time Displaced and I think Heavy Stubble in Brisance, plus Xanatos Gambit in Time Bomb-- on him it looks neat, but on your Sims it could look like showing their age.

Oh my god okay, this was a WHIRLWIND of facial hair, you guys. Wait, lemme toss up the Hair Dump title card, because it's still useful here.
Behind the cut lurk twenty-six beards for your downloading pleasure.
Dump-format downloads inside the cut means boilerplate goes outside the cut-- and this time there is SPECIAL BEARD-DUMP boilerplate!
BEARD-DUMP SPECIAL: You can get your beards three ways: Unbinned, Binned, and Binned-and-Townie-Friendly. Unbinned is self-explanatory; all I did was correct the tooltips. Binning is a little special this time around.
Usually my binning follows the title card above, all nice and sifted into families. NOT THIS TIME. This time, each color is binned as its OWN family-- I swear I had a logical reason for this. Adults will keep their colors when they age up into elder... which means if you decide to give an adult a beard in his destined gray shade, when his hair goes gray, it'll match. It also means when a bearded adult ages up into elder, his beard will keep HIS color instead of choosing from one of four or five grays in the family randomly.
The second important thing to note is townie-enabling. After much debate, I did decide to townie-enable the mesh-less beards available to teenagers... but gray beards are only townie-enabled for elders, and colored beards are only townie-enabled for Teen (when available), Young Adult, and Elder. This is to prevent too much insanity when it comes to townies and NPCs spawning with mis-matched facial hair.
Townie-enabled facial hair will crop up between fifty and seventy-five percent of the time on new CAS or Body Shop Sims, NPCs, and of course townies, dormies, tourists, and the like. Usually it matches either well or passably, but sometimes (stubble, beards, and Synaptic Sim's sideburns all STACK) you may want to get a townie to a barber's chair. Boys will not randomly age up into stubble or full beards at the age of twelve.
I did NOT make new files for the binning and townie-enabling. You can pick and choose, but only between colors. I did think to include a guide with the downloads, but it's a text file (for ease of pasting if you want to change something), so remember not to actually put it in your downloads folder.
As-is, you can layer one stubble, one beard/mustache, and one set of Synaptic Sim's face fur muttonchops. I think it may be possible to at least add more layering capabilities to the non-meshed facial hair using this method, but I didn't think to try it before I started binning.
Okay, on to the usual boilerplate.
NO PAYSITES. Mesh creators' policies may vary, my policy says I want a cut (like that would ever happen), but Pooklet says no and these are Pooklet's actions. So no paysites.

Usually I do these things in alphabetical order, because that's just easier. This time, also because it's easier, I'm going to start off with the beard I did not name, because it seemed ridiculous to give five shades of stubble each their own cute, thematic names. You can see an example of each one above; the first four are right out of the game, and the fifth is on a thicker alpha by Treeag. Swatches are linked below. I also want to put a sort of caveat out there-- the lighter colors (Time Bomb, Primer, Volatile, and Grenade) kind of disappear on fair skintones until you get to the heavier stubble, and Comburent often looks... odd... on darker skintones.

I'm not 100% sure I'll ever need such dramatic muttonchops in my game, but once I found them? I had to get them done in all the naturals. Maybe on some gruff and burly night watchman? And now begins the point where I turn to TV Tropes for beard names. Captain Colorbeard is that trope where a character, often a pirate but sometimes a Viking (which is really just a specific sort of pirate) is called after the... color of their beard. Blackbeard, redbeard, graybeard. ... Bluebeard, although he doesn't really count, since 'serial murderer' doesn't overlap with 'pirate' in his case. This sounds piratical to us because of Captain Edward "Blackbeard" Teach and Oruc "Barbarossa" Reis. (Barbarossa being Italian for red beard.) However, Vikings would use terms like Redbeard or Blackbeard or Forkbeard as kennings, sort of formal nicknames. The Norse didn't really use last names all that much during the Viking Age, but a kenning like Redbeard or Whitehand or The Walker or The Red or Silvertongue. The -sson and -sdottir patronymic and the -jarson matronymic suffixes also count as kennings, not last names-- they weren't used to keep track of lineage so much as differentiate between Erik Svensson and Erik Larsson, so the right one would look up when you yelled.

Did you hear that from your mother? I did. It'll grow back thicker if you cut it or shave it; for me this was supposed to get me to cut my hair once in a while because Mom didn't like the natural look on me; for boys, apparently this is an incentive to shave that horrible patchy thing growing in on the face. "You should shave, sweetie, it'll grow back thicker." And sure enough, the longer he shaves, the thicker it grows back... because a) he finishes puberty, meaning the rest of those follicles wake up, and b) blunt-cut hairs appear thicker than naturally tapered ones. Which makes this a great beard for teenagers who are just getting to the point where shaving turns into an argument with Mom.

Yep, I did two textures each for the Santa and Father Time beards, for all your massive beard needs. And yes, it looks ridiculous on a man with a shaved head. But here it is anyway! I flattened out the contrast a lot to keep Nouk's waves from looking too shiny-- I wanted a natural wavy beard look, not a shiny nylon-fiber department store Santa look. When paired with a hair I retextured using Nouk's waves, this won't be a perfect match in terms of highs and lows, but it doesn't look half bad, either.

I mentioned back on Four Score and Seven that I watched Gargoyles. Well. I did. And two of the beards on this list fit two of the characters fairly well. That makes two beards with Jonathan Frakes-related names, too. (A LOT of Star Trek actors were on that show; Jonathan Frakes was cast first, and suggested Marina Sirtis for another role. Michael Dorn was already in voice acting and easy to get; Brent Spiner's role was such a departure from Data I didn't know it was him. Avery Brooks, Colm Meany, Nichelle Nichols, LeVar Burton, and Kate Mulgrew all had roles... and the part of Oberon was written for Patrick Stewart, who really wanted it but had scheduling conflicts. So it went to Terrence Mann, instead.)

These are probably a lot harder to use than Maxis intended. It works better with hairs that already come over the ear than with hairs that only have one alpha layer, or that have a hairline alpha painted onto their scalp layer. I won't say it's useless cos it's not, but you can get some real funny-looking seams if you aren't careful.

If you stuck with me that long, congratulations! Now it's time for the Body Shop Image Gallery!
First and foremost, here are twenty randomly-rolled male Sims showing off their facial hair, or lack thereof, for those of you wondering how regularly townie-enabled beards roll up.
Starting with the mustachioed redhead at the upper right, we have:
Mustache, Van Dyke, Unlocked Thick, Face Fur & Soul Patch, Amish, Mustache, Stubble, Amish & Face Fur (these do NOT go well together, what with alphas and clipping), Beard, Beard, None, Beard, None, None, Stubble & Face Fur, Beard, None, None, None, Stubble & Face Fur. So, something like 60% of the time, your randomly-rolled men will end up with facial hair, at least if you download all 26 beards townie-enabled. Also, I think only maybe four of the twelve beards rolled up are the same color as the hair they rolled up with, but only the Incendiary Higitus Figitus beard paired with the Primer C'est Moi hair and the stack of differently-colored muttonchops and beard look particularly awkward, at least to me.
Here's my model, Merrick (made by my friend Lyn and then tweaked by me, cos he's got a neat face but Lyn likes larger eyes than I do). For my swatches above, I shaved his head so none of the beards were ever hidden by hair, and turned him into an old man so I could take my screenshots fairly quickly. I figured after all that, I kind of owed him a nice picture looking like himself.
And here's Merrick with a few variations, plus that random-rolled redheaded guy showing off a few more deliberate looks. Starting with the redhead, who is wearing my Traveler hair, Blow The Man Down, Nothing Special, and probably the Medium Stubble in Comburent, plus a Bon Voyage eyepatch because hey look, the face fur is a layerable accessory! Handy! Next is merrick wearing Determination and And I'm Okay in Safety Fuse, looking like Jesus. C'est Moi combines well with Blow The Man Down in Safety Fuse, and looks a little more groomed and less holy. On the bottom row, we start with Merrick in Father To His People and Devil You Know in Brisance, looking very much like a merry monarch; next to that, in Vast Improvement and With An English Accent as well as G-Knee's low bycocket, he just looks like a merry man, instead. And we close with Merrick in Time Displaced and I think Heavy Stubble in Brisance, plus Xanatos Gambit in Time Bomb-- on him it looks neat, but on your Sims it could look like showing their age.
