Oh, pinning to expansions is easy! Copy the string of zeroes from the Skintone line (it's just easier than writing it out) and paste that to Creator and, for anything BUT hair, Family. Set Flags as desired, and then look at the Version and Product lines.

Expansion Packs:
Basegame (no icons): Version 0x00000001, Product 0x00000001
University: Version 0x00000002, Product 0x00000002
Nightlife: Version 0x00000002, Product 0x00000003
Open for Business: Version 0x00000003, Product 0x00000004
Pets: Version 0x00000004, Product 0x00000007
Seasons: Version 0x00000006, Product 0x00000008
Bon Voyage: Version 0x00000006, Product 0x0000000B
Free Time: Version 0x00000006, Product 0x0000000E
Apartment Life: Version 0x00000006, Product 0x00000011

Stuff Packs:
Holiday 05: Version 0x00000002, Product 0x00000001
Holiday 06: Version 0x00000003, Product 0x00000001
Family Fun: Version 0x00000003, Product 0x00000005
Glamour Life: Version 0x00000003, Product 0x00000006
Celebration: Version 0x00000003, Product 0x00000009
H&M: Version 0x00000003, Product 0x0000000A
Teen Style: Version 0x00000004, Product 0x0000000C
K&B: Version 0x00000004, Product 0x0000000F
IKEA: Version 0x00000004, Product 0x00000010 (I don't know for sure if this is right, but no clothes came with Ikea, so... I don't know?)
Sims 2 Store: Version 0x00000006, Product 0x0000000D
M&G: Version 0x00000006, Product 0x00000012

And that's it! The only other thing to remember is that anything you want available for Young Adults has to be Version 0x00000002 or higher.

In my game, Fantasy hair and clothes I can't bear to get rid of, the gothic stuff for vampires, and all Sherahbim's gorgeous fantasy Gypsy clothes are pinned to Nightlife, short hair for lady-knights or female clergy and the ninja costumes I use for unisex clergyperson clothes are pinned to OFB, Castaway Stories clothes and hair, Afro-Caribbean hairs, traditional Chinese and Japanese clothes, and all those gorgeous Rose and XM East Asian hairs are all pinned to BV, Plantsim hairs and tunics and scanties go in Seasons, and like I said I'm thinking about sticking the Viking clothes in BV, too, and heraldic/armored stuff in either OFB (that's where the plate armor comes from) or Store Stuff (that's where the good chainmaille comes from). Which will leave me with only my nice High Middle Ages French-ish stuff sitting out with CC stars.

I do hear you on subtle differences. I'm not one for any bodybuilders bigger than the LBB or Jacci's Runner, because of the skinny Maxis necks and the way REALLY broad shoulders look awkward with the Maxis joints, but there's part of me that kind of wants both the RenGal AND the Well-Rounded Sim in-game, if good male counterparts happen for both of 'em, and I can tell they'd be hard to tell apart. (My trick shall be, always create multi-shape content in the same order. Right now it goes Maxis-Androgyny-AG+RNR-RenGal+???.)
