To a certain extent it is splitting hairs, but if you're interested in textiles, then you might enjoy splitting hairs over dyes and color generally too.
I just double checked what information I could find online, and apparently there were similar colors created with mollusks and the word mauve is based on the word "mallow," a flower. I don't know if mallow was ever used for dye though.
Anyway, mauve was the first aniline dye invented and it was rather revolutionary for fashion as well. Mauve has a specific chemical composition and that was the basis for making my original comment.
