HAIR DUMP IX: IT CAME FROM BEYOND THE HAIR DUMP, PART THREE

Behind the cut lurk thirty-one hairs for your downloading pleasure. Because I have a massive hair dump for you guys tonight, I decided to divide by the sort of Sim I took pictures of. This is the Odd post, which is full of pictures of fairies and Twikkii Islanders and Takemizu villagers and Dame Sir and a random toddler. And coifs. Which aren't weird, but they're formatted funny.
Since there are a zillion downloads inside the cut, the boilerplate goes outside the cut, so...
NO PAYSITES. Mesh creators' policies may vary, my policy says I want a cut (like that would ever happen), but Pooklet says no and these are Pooklet's actions. So no paysites.
PRAISE BE UNTO: Melodie9, Rose, Cynnix, Trapping, Tenshii Akari, and July 77 of XM Sims for meshes, Nouk and Aquilegia for meshes AND textures, Pooklet and Ja for textures, CuriousB for her Any Color You Like actions, Lyn for making sure I had a working copy of Photoshop, Pooklet for making sure Project Mayhem worked with my copy of Photoshop (and for their textures), my lovely donors who make sure I can keep my photos online (which lets me post hair dumps at all), and you lot for your comments and support (and I totally consider racking up downloads to be support).
HEY LISTEN! Meshes are included unless otherwise noted. Swatches are included in the zip files, everything is compressorized. Poly counts may vary; I've started adding poly counts to the dump info (but I always manage to look at the poly count AFTER recoloring the hair). Elders go gray, but you also get Time Bomb in the custom bin, just in case Primer isn't platinum enough for you. All female hairs are maternity-wear enabled from teen and up, and all male hairs from YA and up, to stop the weird hair disappearing act that happens if you don't have a Pregnant Sims Wear Any Outfit hack (but why wouldn't you?).
ANNOYING THINGS I DO: Because I credit everybody in them, my folder and file names are stupidly long. Feel free to shorten one, the other, or both as you please-- better you edit them to suit your needs than I just name everything [COLOR NAME] and cheese everybody off, right? Also, each hair color has an elder gray attached instead of only black. Feel free to re-bin everything and cut out the extra grays, or only use one family but swap out textures so your elders have some variety, whatever. Likewise, I bin using Pooklet's original scheme, because it's a nice easy default. I totally do not care if you re-bin things to suit your own tastes (but hey, every hair has a gray attached in case you need it!), and neither does Pooklet, so do whatever makes you happy, binning-wise.
EVEN MORE ANNOYING: Everybody sees a hair dump, so...
Wanna help me feed my cats?
In case you feel like dropping me a buck or two, should you have a buck or two to spare. Donors get two things at the moment: a) a link to the Super Secret Cat Gallery, full of pictures of the cats you'll be feeding, updated sporadically when the cats do something photogenic and I'm fast enough on the trigger to catch it, and b) a link to the list of content I have done-but-not-screencapped, nearly done, partly done, or in the planning stages, and the option to suggest what ought to be in the next batch of things I focus on.
Yes, if you want to do the unnaturals, please feel free to do the unnaturals. I have no plans to do so. Just remember to credit properly-- I tend to use Nouk's waves, FR's braid, and a chunk of curve I stole off Ja's Uni ponytail default, but anyone I credit, you should credit.
If you spot any broken links or other idiocy, please let me know!
There are thirty-two large pics behind the cut, cats and kittens. Dial-up users beware.

So I did a few basegame hairs that I never thought I'd have a use for-- but I really like them on my Twikkii Islanders, and I figured it's about time they were properly Pooklet'd.

First of the do-overs! There are eleven hairs that I did, but wasn't happy with. This is one of them. I fixed the highlights on the back so that they sit properly, rather than just being a whole great whack of v1 textures.

It just looks like a practical hairstyle if you're hunting wild boar or whatever through the jungle. And in my game, the Twikkii have a relatively high level of gender equality, so a woman could totally hunt and fight if that's her thing.

I did this one before with Sims 2 Heaven curls, and I just was never happy with it. Nouk's Valentine curls got too crunchy, so I just kind of sulked. Then I said to myself "Nouk has those waves now..." And a revised hair was born. (This was recently done by somebody else whose name I forget using Nymphy's edit of Nouk's waves. These are just Nouk's waves. They're a bit bigger and looser.)

Lord, that mesh is a mouthful. This is the undercut ponytail from the basegame-- the one with the close-cut sides, but long on top. Aquilegia's default replacement version has a shaved alpha underneath, but I looked at that ponytail and that mapping and said, "That has possibilities for me to use." It doesn't really look like a feminine Medieval hairstyle, but as something for Dame Sir (or her friends, Fa Mulan, Sweet Polly Oliver, and Jeanne d'Arc) to wear under her helmet or in the practice yard, it has possibilities.

The way this looks on an adult woman, I kept thinking of Maria's haircut from Sound of Music. While I DO require my female devotees to keep their hair cut short in my fictional religious order, Dame Sir makes the whole thing look like... well, like you don't need to solve a problem like Maria. Like I said, this one... this one gets complicated. Okay, first of all, let me disclaim a couple of things. No, I do not have a full and proper swatch for each recolor of the coif fabric, even though I usually do it for alpha edits. I didn't want to get sick of taking screenshots before I even really started. Yes, it IS really hard to tell the darker colors apart. This is one instance where I could totally understand only using one black. (Also, coifs this shape were usually only worn by men or small children. Ladies have more hair to cover.)
There are eight recolors of each sex's coif, using Cynnix's original shading, Aquilegia's linen textures, a selection of CuriousB's Any Color You Like actions, and a picture of a stained concrete floor. I used Aquilegia's default replacement mullet textures for the men's hair and my own Low Bun textures for the women (which Cynnix also used, but all my coifs are different colors than hers, plus I used an alpha edit). ONWARD!

Decently Covered, Bright White
I will say right now that this one is... really, really white. Un-Medievally white. But it is an excellent color for running color actions over, and was my starting point for the whole shebang.
DOWNLOAD on Mediafire | DOWNLOAD on Sims File Share

Decently Covered, Any Color You Like Milk
This shade is much, much easier on the eyes, particularly in Body Shop.
DOWNLOAD on Mediafire | DOWNLOAD on Sims File Share

Decently Covered, Any Color You Like Oyster
And here's a nice soft color. I went with so many because... well, fabric gets kind of grayish as it ages, plus you could tell a woman's status by looking at the color of her headcloth, back in the day. They all would've been linen, and the weaving depended on a lot of factors, but the color...
DOWNLOAD on Mediafire | DOWNLOAD on Sims File Share

Decently Covered, Any Color You Like Sand
See, linen behaves interestingly in the sun. Wet linen, exposed to UV light, bleaches. Dry linen, in the same conditions, yellows. A woman with a perfectly white head-covering is wealthy enough to pay somebody to take her things off the line the moment they're dry.
DOWNLOAD on Mediafire | DOWNLOAD on Sims File Share

Decently Covered, Any Color You Like Custard
A woman with a yellowed head covering, however, either has lazy servants or has too much to do to be poking the laundry every five minutes, checking to see if the veils and coifs and wimples and shifts are dry enough to put away yet. (Although this is yellow enough that it's probably dyed.)
DOWNLOAD on Mediafire | DOWNLOAD on Sims File Share

Decently Covered, Any Color You Like Caramel
On top of that, hair oils will cause white or light fabric to yellow, too. If a woman can't afford enough headcloths to launder them regularly-- and still keep her head properly covered-- they're going to get a little dingy as they age. (The best, whitest one, of course, would be saved for Sundays and special occasions.)
DOWNLOAD on Mediafire | DOWNLOAD on Sims File Share

Decently Covered, Any Color You Like Dove
But even that headcloth so old it's practically gray is still useful. Nobody with a perfectly-bleached veil or cap would bother to wear it while working, and even high-born ladies worked at certain things-- embroidery, sewing, sometimes spinning or weaving... or hawking. Or traveling.
DOWNLOAD on Mediafire | DOWNLOAD on Sims File Share

Decently Covered, Grunge (Any Color You Like Caramel with staining)
And then, of course, there are those who just can't afford anything better than the one cap, cloth, or veil they've got. It may be getting a little ragged, a little threadbare, a little stained, but you wear what you've got until it wears out, and then you sell it to the rag buyer.
DOWNLOAD on Mediafire | DOWNLOAD on Sims File Share

I Got Better, Bright White
But a coif like this was much, much more a men's headcovering. Yes, men were expected to keep their heads covered, too, but it was a little bit less about modesty and virginity. (Although the same 'the whiter your cap, the better you can afford to pay your laundress' standard still applied.)
DOWNLOAD on Mediafire | DOWNLOAD on Sims File Share

I Got Better, Any Color You Like Milk
The coif, you see, was something of a protective barrier. I've already mentioned that hair oils will discolor linen eventually-- well, they'll do the same to wool, silk, or velvet, too. And the Medieval person did bathe, fairly regularly... but not really super often. Once a week, maybe twice if you really liked to be clean (which was considered vain). Hands and faces were washed before meals, of course, but a full-body washing wasn't a daily occurance.
DOWNLOAD on Mediafire | DOWNLOAD on Sims File Share

I Got Better, Any Color You Like Oyster
The coif was worn to bed-- in fact, if Medieval artwork is to be believed, it was common for a couple to go to bed in nothing BUT coifs. (You can leave your hat on indeed!) There is relatively little fabric involved in making a coif, but rather a lot in making sheets and pillows and pillowcases. Wearing a coif (or other kind of nightcap) to bed helped protect the bedclothes, prolonging their life and making sure the laundress didn't have to do heavy work too often.
DOWNLOAD on Mediafire | DOWNLOAD on Sims File Share

I Got Better, Any Color You Like Sand
The coif also protected the fabric of hats from hair oil. Coifs, after all, were linen, easily washed, and all but the very poorest had a spare. Hats, on the other hand, tended to be made of wool, or straw, or finer stuff, and getting them wet enough to get them clean would spoil them. Can't have that, so, coif first, hat second.
DOWNLOAD on Mediafire | DOWNLOAD on Sims File Share

I Got Better, Any Color You Like Custard
(That said, anyone who made accessory hats to go over this coif mesh would be my hero.)
DOWNLOAD on Mediafire | DOWNLOAD on Sims File Share

I Got Better, Any Color You Like Caramel
Sometimes, the coif protected the wearer from the hat. A peasant's straw hat would provide shade out in the fields, but on a bare head would scratch and catch hair and generally just be a nuisance. The coif kept it comfortable.
DOWNLOAD on Mediafire | DOWNLOAD on Sims File Share

I Got Better, Any Color You Like Dove
The knight or mercenery would not be without a padded linen coif under his maille coif or solid helmet. A layer of thick wool would be quilted between two coif layers to protect His Lordship's hair and skin from the bite of chainmaille.
DOWNLOAD on Mediafire | DOWNLOAD on Sims File Share

I Got Better, Grunge (Any Color You Like Caramel with staining)
Rarely, you might see a coif made out of something really hard-wearing, like leather, usually on a blacksmith trying to protect his hair (or scalp; a lot of fictional smiths seem to be bald0 from the heat of the forge. Sometimes you see them on peasants who claim to have been turned into newts, too.

I can't remember if in the books GRRM specifies if Brienne's hair is long or short, but I can't imagine how functional she'd be with long hair. Which is why Sir Dame in your hair dumps is so funny, cos ANY of those hairs could be Brienne! But the face and the scars are spot-on. She just needs some freckles and she's the Maid of Tarth!! :D :D
Hopefully when you feel satisfied with your tweaks I'll be up to the task of a SoIaF 'hood *G*
