Hair Dump... Again
Well, I've been home since Thursday night, I still haven't put my Build and Buy stuff back in my Downloads folder... but I come bearing, um. Twenty-one hairs in yet another hair dump. I SWEAR someday I'll put these up on Garden of Shadows, honest, with pretty in-game pics and everything, but right now? Goddamn I just want to share.

Wanna help me feed my cats?
In case you feel like dropping me a buck or two, should you have a buck or two to spare. Donors get two things at the moment: a) a link to the Super Secret Cat Gallery, full of pictures of the cats you'll be feeding, updated sporadically when the cats do something photogenic and I'm fast enough on the trigger to catch it, and b) a link to the list of content I have done-but-not-screencapped, nearly done, partly done, or in the planning stages, and the option to suggest what ought to be in the next batch of things I focus on.

Okay, and since there are twenty-two hairs behind the cut, let's put the boilerplate outside the cut.
One Fish: NO BLOODY PAYSITES. These are Pooklet's actions, Pooklet says no. So don't do it.
Two Fish: Binned! Familied! Compressorized! Meshes included except where you need an expansion pack! Swatches included in the download files!
Red Fish: Elders all have gray-- you get Pipe Bomb for Family One, Smoke Bomb (my homebrew) for Family Two, Mail Bomb for Family Three, and Time Bomb for Family Four. It is complete cluttery overkill, but every color has an elder gray attached, and you may count yourself lucky I didn't just do gray streaks or something. Feel free to re-bin and re-upload as you please, it doesn't hurt my feelings. Time Bomb is included as a custom for all (applicable) ages, since you never know when you'll need a white-haired toddler. Or something.
Blue Fish: Right, so, gotta thank Pooklet, Ja, Quaxi, Theo, Kale, Sugar and Caffeine, FantasyRogue, Bedwyr, Xandher, Ulkrshn, StakeitUK, Coolsims, Newsea, Dora Emon, Yuxi, Jade, Melodie9, Hysterical Paroxysm, HIM666, BeosBoxBoy, Talenzz, SimCribbling, Faceplug, Adele, CutthroatDollie, Augustin, Nissi, Marko, Sussi, Coldfire, Morrigun, Sim Artist's Union, and probably Nouk and always Lyn, because Lyn made sure I had Photoshop, and Photoshop is important.
I Do Not Like Green Eggs and Ham: OH PLEASE edit my file and/or folder names to taste; I made them ridiculously long so that they could be snipped down to fit folks' organizational systems. If you subfolder these too deeply, they could fail to show due to the name strings being too long. I mean, even I cut things down a bit. Better a ridiculously long filename you can shorten than going "Goddammit, which frickin' hair is this?" later, right?

I have a buttload of skintones, but the only eyes I use are the Maritime Eyes by Panaqoulus. I've done a few recolors for myself, because apparently I can't function without good red and yellow eyes in my game, but I love the sclera. It's the best one I've seen, not totally flat white, but no giant black blobs, either. ... I'm really, really picky about eyes.
Noses are awesome, I just have this problem where I like the awesome, interesting noses on guys more than women. I need to work on my character actress faces.
Mm, and my testerhood is for pictures, making sure mods work, checking my defaults, checking other people's defaults, and generally making sure everything looks the way I want it to look. ... And works properly. Working properly is important.
no subject
I only use my own set at the moment, which is about as complete as a skintone set is going to get for me (I've got all my bases covered) and I use a personal mix of a non-blobby black bit sclera I got from Ja with the irises off one of shady's eyesets (with personal recolours just as you have done, yellows, reds, etc). I'd never seen those maritime eyes before, they're nice.
You can always make the awesome interesting male sim and then just magically gender convert him. I switch sims from male to female and back a lot when I make a new sim to see if the face works for both genders.
Yes, the working properly bit is important. I guess since I'm not doing defaults or anything atm I need less testing. With simple objects I just have to check whether the sim interacts properly and nothing looks out of place and I'm done. Clothes I just check from all angles, make the sim play on the sofa for a while to check if nothing animates horribly weirdly and then done. It sounds like you're very thorough (this is a good thing, btw)
And now I shall stop spamming up your dreamwidth for a while XD (sorry bout that!). I'm off on vacation to London for a long weekend starting tomorrow, so no internet for a few days.

I'm... a bit nuts with skins. I sort of have, um. A hundred and seventy-five human skins (I need seven more, I have a gap! A gaaaaaap!), plus my creature defaults, plus my multi-PT skins... Yeah. Variety is the spice of life? (And yet, I still have more hair by... uh, data volume.) Eyes seem to be the only thing I can keep down at a reasonable number, in terms of genetics, I guess because there's not as much room for random eyes to pop up as I breed my Sims. Anything I want to show up has to be on a founder.
Yeah, and that's what I plan to do, sort of, when I do my Great Founder Remodel-- switch my ladies into men, make their faces more distinctive, and turn 'em back again. Lately I've been checking to see if breeding-stock Sims make hideous toddlers, too.
For some things, too, I like to have a separate lot set up for a photoshoot-- but that's just me, really. But... yeah, if it doesn't work, I have to fix it. Better to get it done right the first time. Or at least before I share it.
Oooh, I hope you have fun! (No worries about spam, if I've got something to say, chances are I'll reply, so... yeah.)
no subject
There's always more skintones around ;) (http://fantasyrogue.livejournal.com/35729.html make sure you're logged into your lj account). I love variety, but for some reason it drives me mad to have too many skintones. I think it's because I cannot stand it when I get a different type of skintone than the parents had on a child due to geneticized skintones and such. Eyes is the same thing, although that's more also because I'm really picky. Then again, I'm also really picky about skintones... I discount a lot of them because of what body they use or what nose or etc... I dunno why, I just do (I do the same for clothes.. well everything really).
That'll work, I think. You'll either get cooler, more varied, sims.. or well. a good laugh? (seriously though, it does work). I tend to not check breeding for my playables beyond aging them down a sec to see if nothing looks awfully out of place. But I have a personal policy to not move the face up or down, which tends to help. I did breed-test my PT sims, obviously, all those kids were good (althogh PT Boreas gives somewhat strong featured, mannish, female children. But I love his features <3)
I have a few photoshoot lots. Eventually my testing hoods turn into a mess and I purge them XD And that's a good thing to do, getting things right before release. Another good one is to not leave a project hanging too long... I should do that one more :| (I can't remember which file is which now for some)
I had a brilliantly great time. I've had more culture boost in one weekend than in a year XD So. Many. Museums. History everywhere, awesome stuff (British Museum! Rosetta Stone! Mummies! Woo! V&A Museum! Actual victorian (and older) clothes!). Picked up a great book on victorian fashions too (with about 1000 fashion plates in it, mostly ladies clothes.. sadly no menswear). Would have grabbed something about egyptians but I'm finding the book selections on that are not what I want anywhere :| Lot of books about pyramids and gods, not so much about everyday life..
(continues spamming)

Oooh skins. I may have to see if any of those fall in my gap. I... well, I like a lot of skintones, but I'm also moderately picky about things like pixelation and details-- I use Warlokk and Bloom defaults, so nipples have to be in reasonable places, toes have to work properly with sexy feet, elder female textures need to be mapped the same as adult female textures (I have an elder nude default with details that uses the same mapping. I actually went through your Canvas skins, which are awesome, and adjusted the boobs on all of them so I could use them with my mesh defaults. Usually all I do is swap textures, because most EF skins are exactly the same as AF skins, only with saggy boobs). How do you mean 'a much different type of skintone'? Maybe I've been pretty good about keeping mine fairly similar...
I did move one of my PTs' faces up two or three clicks, but I was going for that Tinkerbell look. ... Also, she's a PT. A nice inhuman fae PT. Her offspring can look a bit weird. (He's actually cute, he offspring, even if he does look kind of like a caricature of Dick Van Dyke.) Usually, for normal-looking Sims, I won't do that.
I just playtested someone else's house that I turned into a dorm. The mailbox seems to be broken-- it was nice not getting any bills, but... damn, I really liked that lot. (Okay, so I was actually checking out my college assignment, diploma, and door privacy sign defaults, but I took the opportunity to playtest anyway.) Someday the 'hood will go boom and I'll scrap it.
Yay for enjoying your trip, and for books! Books are awesome. Bummer that you didn't find what you were looking for for Egyptians... At least you have the internet? There's got to be something around here. The Egyptians were big on writing things down, after all.
no subject
Ah yeah, well on PTs I suppose it's alright, they are more *alien* looking, or more fae or whichever. For normal sims it can be problematic. (lol, caricature Dick Van Dyke? haha)
Aw, that's a shame about the dorm :( Hate when something like that happens, you get excited about something working or being able to use something and it's just not possible. How'd the default testing go?
Books rock. The victorian book is giving me loads of neat ideas atleast.
I've already searched the internet a dozen times XD Women's wear I think I mostly get how it was constructed. It's the kilts, I get how the loincloth looked and that they then covered it with a kilt (if they weren't a poor worker) which was fastened with a belt of sorts, or if you had a higher social status (or in the later dynasties) you may have worn a robe over it of some sort, but in a lot of the art you see the kilts have these huge flaps in front or are unusually shaped and I just have some trouble figuring out how those kilts were folded. Did they use a cut into shape cloth or a square one? If square, then why are the edges sometimes curved, etc etc. Unfortunately most written info doesn't help on that as that usually is "they wore a loincloth, sometimes covered with a kilt" and then the discussion moves on.. it sort of really glosses over that stuff. It's like "they wore white linen! Woo! let's talk about gods some more and the afterlife!".
no subject
So far, I haven't had too much trouble with that... but the most non-alien breeding I've done, I've done while testing Plantsims. (I don't mind things like different noses too much-- in my immediate family, only my mother and brother have similar noses. I got Nana's nose. Likewise my brother and sister are on the pinkish side for skintones, and I'm more sallow.) But then I'm also ludicrously careful about what gets in where in my genetics-- I recently reorganized everything from about halfway between S2 and S4. Yellow tones tend to group together a bit, but if someone down at the 0.02 end of my spectrum falls in with somebody way up at 1.02, all bets are off, their kids could look like anything.
Dude, he seriously does. I would show you a picture if I'd manned up and paid for photobucket. He's adorable, really, but considering my Sims lean toward the realistic, he's so doofy-looking. So, so doofy-looking.
I actually did find some bills sitting in the street and, like an idiot, deleted them. Imay re-plonk the building and see if I can pay those bills. As for defaults, well, dorm sign good, assignment good, diploma... I think I need to build a bigger version. It's just not as crisp as would be ideal. Gotta make a new texture, I think. Can't find where or if I saved my layers.
Man, Egyptian history is actually more interesting than Egyptian mythology. Apparently a book does exist. There are a few things on The Costumer's Manifesto, but not much I'd consider useful. ... Maybe there's some easier-to-understand artwork from Ankhenaten/Amenhotep IV's reign? Usually, I've seen the stiff-flapped kilts depicted as being a flat belt that's been perspective-warped so you can see all of it-- like the way they painted eyes as being forward-facing even though the faces were done in profile. It could also be a decorative piece that marks the closure of the over-kilt itself-- pinned or with hidden ties at each corner.
no subject
I got my dad's nose, also my grandmother's nose, lucky me. We all have sinus problems :P But yeah, it sounds like you put a *lot* of work into sorting your skintone. And wow you have a lot of them and must have a fun variety going on. I can understand it that way, the prospect of sorting out all those skintones from scratch? Ouch. I think I'll stick with the few I have XD
I'm still waiting for my paid photobucket to run out, I may get a different kind of host for pics after. Not sure yet (maybe a proper webhost not specific to pics). Not that I have something against photobucket, just thinking maybe it's time for something else. Though my bandwidth is seeing far less strain now that I haven't updated my legacy in aaages >.<
Or the repo man will come, take your stuff and it'll be done with? Ugh, I've started putting my PSD files in a specific folder now to make sure I don't lose them anymore.. and I don't end up with 4 unused projects folders because "hey there may be texture files in there I need". Biggest problem now is the part where I think I forgot to stick one or two hair retextures I did in there and I already deleted the folders >.< I are idiot. Anyway, hope you get the diploma sorted out, always hard to say whether a crisper, bigger, texture will fix it or not.
Maybe so, but a lot of books do go into the afterlife stuff. Not surprising since it was such a huge deal to ancient egyptians. I hadn't seen that book before, it looks useful but also really expensive XD However, that did make me decide to see if it was available at a library (perhaps the not so far away archeological museum's library) and through that I found there's a few more books like [url=http://www.amazon.com/Costume-Ancient-Egypt-Reference/dp/1555467717[this[/url]. Course, seems all these books are old, only available second-hand and there's no way of seeing what's actually inside them. I wonder if the museum library is accessible to everyone...
It does make sense it would be some kind of belt or decorative piece. Still occasionally I do read that you have to be careful interpreting the drawings compared to what the actual garments may have looked like. Egyptians weren't big on being super correct all the time :P Not that in the end it matters, it's the Sims, if it *looks* egyptian, that should be enough (I can just be really, stupidly, obsessively, precise in these things. I just want to know now how it *really* looked).
And thanks for also looking for some things :) It's appreciated.

I think part of it is that people don't tend to want to see their elders naked, so they just skip it to save space. (I skipped it to save space on the Stolen by Fairies skins because... well, there were six of them.) Me, on the other hand, I've got townified naked underwear for all ages and both genders, so when I found out a whole bunch of my skins skipped any differences for elders, I said "Well, screw it," and got this default although I kind of wish these were a default instead. (Or that I knew wtf I was doing in order to make them a default). There isn't, unfairly, any EF default nude that lets the old ladies have any bits.
Yeah, I started off with just my defaults and Pooklet's Less Pop Concert, More Butchery set, cos they were already genetic. Then I discovered how easy it is to geneticize, and an addiction was born. It's not too bad, really, if you geneticize each set of skintones as you install them (and since I've already got to play Swap the Boob Textures before I compressorize, SimPE's already open). I got (sort of) lucky, and the default set I started off with also came with two extra custom skintones that fell in between S1 and S2, and S3 and S4. It gave me a nice framework-- "Okay, this is lighter than that but darker than this, so we'll call it *number for now..."
I've put off paying for Photobucket long enough that I'm three days away from refreshed bandwidth. I might actually pay when it restarts, just so it's easier to keep track of the date. I, um, sort of planned to get a bunch of Plus LJ accounts for free photohosting whenever I started a legacy... Cos I'm that cheap. Legacy would be posted here, just hosted there.
Repo man never came-- I had Boolprop on, and hit reset whenever the error came up, so it was like the mailman just forgot the lot. And yeah, I've been saving my PSDs separately, too-- I need to put all my body shop ones somewhere besides rattling around loose in the Projects folder. (Like, say, in the My Projects folder on my desktop that has a ton of shit in it.) When I first started making defaults, I totally sucked at saving layers of ANYTHING. I've learned my lesson.
Well, hey, a library is an awesome place, museum or not, and there are always inter-library loans, maybe. Don't know about your local library system, but the one where I live has a website where you can search for titles and find out if they're checked out or available and even put a hold on them, all from the comfort of your PJs. Totally well worth a look.
Also? Seriously, I understand. Egyptians were not big on perspective in flat art, so it's hard to tell how those things would have fallen... although on statues, they generally seem to lie flat. And I actually make historical doll clothes for money, so I know all about looking at period photos and artwork and going 'okay, this seam is here and that one's there and this should be spiral-laced and...'
no subject
Well, yeah I admit I don't sit around staring at my elder sims with no clothes on. But I make it my business to have atleast tested every gender and age of a skintone base so I can tell whether anything's terribly off or not (or that I didn't, yet again, accidentily paste the wrong texture on with build dxt and have a male elder with boobs again >.>)
Hmm, well defaulting that should be doable. The mesh, you mean right? You'd just find the actual elder nude meshes (top and bottom gmdc), build a new package with them and then replace the mesh inside the gmdc. I'm probably making it sound simpler than it is :P
I keep the usual S1-S4 defaults and then have one geneticized below S1 (a paler skin), something between S2 and S3, between S3 and S4 and then a few darker tones above S4 (my S4 is about maxis in darkness). I still can't imagine having that many skintones.
I just got a notice that I'm running out on my paid account. Still haven't decided what I want to do about it. Legacies are fun, when you get around to posting I'll keep an eye out.
Hm, mailman not showing up entirely can't be a good thing. I've started making a folder aptly named "Sims Things" :P Which is subfoldered with things like Own Creations - Skintones and Own Creations - Clothes, etc, where I keep backups of everything I've created in package format and a folder named PSD Files, where I stick all the PSD files for everything I made (provided I still have it. I lost the detailed one for the Travel Skirt, for example, because I accidentily overwrite the PSD with the flattened bmp back when I made it :| ). Layers are a good thing, I tend to go overboard. But it does mean I can easily recolour or remove spots from a skintone or things like that XD
I think they have a site, yes, the harder part is that I expect their collection of english language books may be somewhat smaller. The museum library intimidates me, because I'm not an archeologist or anything, and apparantly you need to call in advance, and show ID and such. Eek.
Ooh, you do? That sounds like a cool thing to do. What kinda dolls? That certainly doesn 't sound easy.
no subject
Yeah, keeping ages and genders straight is a fun trick. It makes me so happy when the various and sundry textures are labeled right on the texture and I don't have to just guess as I go to play Swap The Boobies. And hey, as long as it was the elder male fat state...
I'm sure it's doable and probably no harder than texture defaults (find thingy. Art art art. Build DXT. Remove needless info. Test. From there, either Yay done! or Repeat Art art art, Test), I just totally fail at defaulting meshes-- it seems to go right over my head, which means I absolutely do not have the hang of it yet. If I did have the hang of it, I'd go and replace the EF nude, undies, and swimwear with that one, and the TF nude, undies, and swimwear with a mesh by Bloom that gives them both sexy feet and a (kind of huge but better than nothing) pregmorph. (Because what's a Medieval game without the Infamous Kitten Killer?)
I started with some Louis defaults plus two extra skintones, because they were made specifically for the Xhi-Res set-- I tried Navetsea's F-in-Evo, and I still use the Zombie from that, but they're really dark for my tastes. (Which means I probably ought to redownload them and use them as custom skintones; I have a significant gap in the tan range). Got Pooklet's freckles. Got Pooklet's Compulsion, because the freckles were overwhelming the normal skins. Learned to geneticize, thank you Quintcia. Went crazy geneticizing. Everything. Now I have twenty-eight different sets of skins. (Although I wasn't mad enough to keep all of Kids in Technicolor.)
Two more days, and then I'll decide if I want to fork over twenty-five bucks or forty. Forty's the better deal, but I'm leaning toward twenty-five, because... it's easier to excuse.
I just discovered why the mailman wasn't turning up, actually-- turns out, if you use any non-Maxis dorm door, you need this fix. I was using the Parsimonious Wandering door, and got screwed. It's not the lot, it's the doors!
My Pookleting method includes layers. Do the Volatile, then move it to another file, then do the grays, stack 'em up on the file with the Volatile, then the rest of the colors, then make sure they're sorted in the 'right' order, then actually start recoloring the hair. And save the layered file in case something goes Horribly Wrong, as it does with about every fourth or fifth hair.
That is a bit intimidating, but I can see why a museum library would want to keep more careful track than a regular old public library where all they have to worry about is somebody stuffing a copy of Twilight down their pants and making a run for it.
Usually dollhouse dolls, two to six inches tall, but sometimes (usually for myself, actually) sixteen-inch Tonner dolls. I really need to a) move my doll journals to Dreamwidth and b) take some better pictures, but on this one, I re-rooted the hair, repainted the face, and made everything she's wearing but one pair of shoes, both pairs of earrings, and the jeans. Yes, I made the book. I'm really rather proud of the book. (Dollhouse stuff, I'd link you, but I got a new camera and DAMN I need to re-take pictures of everything I've still got, because my old camera was apparently a piece of crap.)

Hmm, well I saw a tutorial on the subject on, was it le_plat_du_jour's journal? Or atleast, on the subject of default replacing clothing meshes. And naked bodies are pretty much the same as clothing meshes :P
I just can't use those navetsea ones. It's one of those skintones that provoke an "ick" response in me. Something about the somewhat greasy tone of the skin, the hip bones that are way pronounced. Oh and the alien one didn't have any teeth (that was kinda creepy). Geneticizing is great though, it adds much needed variety and variety is always good.
Forty's a big chunk of money on one go. Still haven't decided anything over here, got 4 days till it reverts to a free account. Eh.
Well atleast you found out. It would have been more frustrating if you couldn't find the issue either. I never knew this, but I never use custom dorm doors.
For hair I only save the volatiles. But when I texture clothing I tend to end up with layers on layers, base colour, shading, highlight, seams, little details, fabric texture overlay maybe, etc etc
Lol, that's a great mental image. I've never seen anyone try to steal from a library, they have bar codes in em and the alarm goes off if you run out the door with a non checked-out book :P Be far easier to just check it out and then never return it :P
Wow, that doll's very impressive! And pretty. You've got some serious sewing skills (and tiny book making skills). That must be a lot of work to do.

I may have to dig around and have a look. I'm all about equality in nudity, and I pregmorphs on anything that can get 'em (unlike many InTeen users, I am not satisfied with painting jeans and converse on a nude mesh).
What did me wasn't so much the greasy look to them (in a game with as ridonkulous a genetic spectrum as mine, a few greasy peasants wouldn't be out of place) as the 'signature' rings painted on, the slight graininess, and the fact that the lighter skins are still kind of dark. I never played around with that alien-- no teeth, seriously?-- but I gave the vampire a whirl (ditched it for Rensim's), decided the werewolf wasn't hairy enough, and... like I said, I'm still using the zombie. I may edit it so it's got nice filmy eyes (and no more rings), though, but it really does suit my tastes as far as dead people go.
I'ma pay tonight at midnight. Still undecided about the amount, but...
I was just idly poking around MATY after picking up a couple of hacks Morgaine mentioned and I went "Omg divide by zero error? THAT IS MY PROBLEM!" So now bills can come. And be pricy. ... Ish, since there's not much swanky stuff in the house.
Saving the layers on the hairs lets me be extremely anal about the order things fall in, in the hair catalog. Everything's gotta go in the same order, or I make angryfaces. Clothing... yeah, I can see how you'd end up with a ton of layers. I've ended up with a ton of layers, and I mostly just remix existing clothing.
But then they'd know where to find you!
Thank you! She's... sort of a sampler piece for me, since I keep so little of my own work. Most of her clothes were just... basic hand-sewing skills, like the shirt and vest (although I learned to custom-print fabric for the vest, that was fun), but the bodice of that ballgown... That sucker is interfaced, beaded, embroidered, and lined. The sleeves are lined, interlined, and stuffed with tulle and iridescent thread. And it's synthetic fabric. I cannot tell you how much I hate working with synthetic fabric in miniature, but the look was right. Can't argue with the look.

Ugh, painted on jeans and converses. I prefer clothes as meshed as possible, personally. But I am known to be ridiculously picky when it comes to sim clothes anyway, both for the mesh and the textures. It's a shame more people do not add preg morphs, it's not that difficult.
Oh yeah, the rings, I almost forgot about those. And yes, the alien has no teeth. The teeth mesh is there, as it can't be removed, but there's no teeth texture.. just this sort of... orangy gum-like strip. Like the alien had all their teeth pulled. Zombie eyes don't work on the skintone. I've tried putting eyes on zombie defaults so many times, it has absolutely zero effect in game (unfortunately).
Hey, small bills or not, atleast your sims aren't getting a free ride anymore.
Hey, it's nothing compared to when I start painting digitally. A lot of my artwork comes in at a staggering amount of layers sometimes. And I'm really bad at naming them, but really good at constantly making new ones. So after a while it's "uh, I forgot where I put that.. i'll just make a new layer"
Aha! Not if I .. moved suddenly and didn't leave a change of address!
That ballgown is so pretty. It's really gorgeous, you've got some skill. I am really impressed by your sewing skills, I don't know how you do it (the most I've done with sewing in my life is a pair of pants, half a teddybear and some simplistic barbie clothes). Isn't it difficult to work at such small sizes?

I'm... in the middle there when it comes to being picky about meshes and clothing. On the one hand, if I'm too picky, I'll have to do everything myself. On the other hand, most of the really, really good meshes seem to be contemporary, and that makes me a sad Hat.
... That's weird. I wonder why the zombie skins don't take eyes. Ah well. I have some contacts that'll work.
Yeah, and if they hadn't all just graduated... Oh well, it'll be fixed for the next batch of kids.
I've done that! Although my forays into digital painting were a couple of cel-shaded sketches, just to see if I could. Currently I'm trying to slap my 'this means it's magic' oak and TeruK's BJD skin on Amaryll's androgynous Servo, and running into problems at the ankle. The grain has gone all funky, and of course it's somewhere I can't feasibly add a joint.
Actually, I taught myself to sew on dollhouse dolls-- from two-inch babies to six-inch menfolk-- so Sarah, who's sixteen inches, felt HUGE. It's all about the size you're used to working in. And of course I can't use a machine on the dollhouse clothes-- the longest seams tend to be about four inches, if that-- so I have no idea how to use one.

Aw, sad Hat's not fun :( I don't mind doing a lot of it myself, ofcourse I say this because I am capable of doing so. Still, I like downloading other people's stuff, it'd be quite insane if I had to do *everything* myself and I often am not all that happy about my own stuff anyway. I just have really high standards for what I do grab (which can be annoying. I tend to want to mess with everything I kinda want but isn't up to how I want it).
I've no idea really, it's always been that way but whether it's a bug or not, who knows.
I don't really do cel-shaded, I've tried but it's not my thing, I tend to move more towards painterly styles. It's all fun though :)
Ankles.. blah. They're a pain due to the mapping of feet to legs often. I dunno if it's that way for the servo, but highly possible. It can be annoying.
*does quick google calculations to cm* Those are some small dolls! So do you make stuff for dollhouses for them as well or do you buy that? I am assuming there's a dollhouse for these little dolls atleast, maybe not. And yeah, I can see how a sewing machine would be entirely too bulky for that kind of small work. I only know how to work my mom's 70s model sewing machine really.. some day I ought to buy my own and have some fun with it, but damn those things are expensive. They'd come in handy for some things though. I recently had a lot of trouble finding nice decorative pillows for my sofa and a sewing machine would have meant I could just buy some nice fabric in whatever pattern/colour I wanted and make pillows out of that. Oh well.

I'm... learning-- I'm still a novice at a lot of stuff, and I have no desire to learn to mesh-- but it's the love of theme that really gets me in trouble. I can see an empty niche for certain things that I do not have the skills to make or patience to really really finish. (And then I make things and forget to share them.) I do, however, mess with every damn thing. I love custom food, but if they come on custom plates I'm liable to dip into my store of photos and make them more period.
I'm using Amaryll's androgynous Servo, so it's mapped pretty similarly to a nude skin-- I finally found something that looks okay on the ankles, although I may slap some kind of decoration there when I really finish. Now I'm trying to make the shoulder seams pretty. I do that, I move on to the head. Scary. (For the record, TeruK's BJD skin uses the AM texture for EM, TM, and... CU. WTF. Little girls do not need cut pecs, yo.)
I do HAVE a dollhouse, but it's the kind that closes in the front like a cabinet. And that's how it's currently being used, as a storage cabinet. I don't even know what's up in there anymore. My dollhouse furniture is on display on shelves, instead. I do make some other things for dollhouse dolls-- hats, tiny stuffed animals, perfume bottles out of glass beads, that kind of thing-- but I'm not a woodworker, so I either buy furniture or buy furniture kits, which are fun, and I don't sculpt, so anything like food or flowers or... whatever, that, I buy. (My rule is, if I can make it, for a lesser or comparable price, without driving myself insane in the process, I'm allowed to buy it.) You could hand-sew pillows, that's a nice straight seam-- it takes a while, but it's a nice straight seam. Course, it's a lot faster to sew a nice straight seam with a sewing machine-- someday I really do intend to learn, so I can make some curtains (to hide some stuff on a bookshelf. Rats make great pets, but I have become a fan of hiding stuff that isn't pretty to look at, and pet supplies count.)

Meshing's not so bad. But I never really had a desire to learn it until I ran into things I couldn't do with just retexturing (and my very first finished complete mesh was actually fireman pants with a bare torso for this calender I made once that's on MTS :P Classy, huh?). I'm amazingly stubborn at creating and I sort of crave new challenges in a way. I prefer doing projects that seem difficult (but not impossible, I'm not a masochist :P) over doing something I have done a bunch of times before. Or projects I can just let my creativity let loose on. For example, I'm not that fond of blending skintones even if I did two sets.. but I love doing the supernatural skintones because I get to decorate and paint, I get to combine colours and add little details and that stuff is just *fun*.
You're reminding me of all the seam issues with skintones, bleurgh XD I wish you lots of luck with figuring out the servo. Skintones can be such pains in the butt. Yeah, I noticed that before when I had an alien kid born with a purple recolour of one of TeruK's skintones. He had this very pronounced clavicle and the chest looked like the male skintone. It wasn't a super cut skin, so there was atleast that, but still. Lazy!
So not a display dollhouse either? You could do it up like in the olden days :D Basically like a display cabinet, but for tiny rooms. I remember seeing one or two at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, old ones. *searches around for a bit* Like so http://www.rijksmuseum.nl/images/aria/bk/z/bk-nm-1010.z and http://www.rijksmuseum.nl/images/aria/bk/z/bk-14656.z (I hope those links work). You know that sounds like a lot of fun? Crafting tiny things. And talking of sculpting reminds me that I still have half a pack of super sculpey lying around >.< I am going to finish that figure some time, I swear XD
Mm, I suppose pillows can be hand-sewn yeah. Although moot point now, I managed to find a store that sold cheap pillow cases in just the colour I was looking for. I'm having my curtains professionally sewn atm (my living room windows are very bare right now, we only moved here a few months ago and curtains weren't high on the list.. well except for bedroom curtains) the ceilings are tall and the window large and on top of that it's an older house (1906-1930, thereabouts) and the ceiling is made of straw, so trying to put a curtain rail up there ourselves would probably result in the rail, and the ceiling, falling on our heads XD I figure, I can spend money on nice quality well-sewn curtains now and since they're so big, when I move, I'll just take them with me and reuse them. Making bigger curtains smaller is always possible :P
(you have rats? Rats are awesome. I love most small rodents as pets, I used to have gerbils myself)

I can totally understand the love of supernatural skintones. And the stubbornness-- I WILL get default replacements done for everything that doesn't already have at least one decent Medieval default, oh yes I will. Although the whole new-challenge thing is how I am with sewing-- being able to Pooklet hairs is a great relief because I'm guaranteed consistent results, but when I want to make something with my own hands, hey, let's draft a new pattern!
It's on all of them? Dangit. I have a couple alien recolors of those skins that I love all to bits saved for the alien invasion game (if I ever get it going again), but now I'm considering editing them. Fmeh. Seam issues suck, they really do. And I'm kind of disappointed that this BJD skintone doesn't have half the joints a BJD would need (I owned one for a while, got tired of her, and rehomed her at a very very slight loss).
Actually, my elegant three-story storage cabinet is constructed along similar lines to that first one, it's just also got siding and windows. Most of my furniture is on display on a set of shelves in room groupings, sort of how I plan to do it up when I can reclaim and finish my house. It needs wiring, which I need to learn to do.
Well, hey, it's awesome you found what you were looking for! I tend to get throw pillows at discount places, because it's cheaper than sewing them. And indeed it is always possible to cut things down eventually. Your ceiling is made of straw?
(One aging, ailing rat at the moment. I am expecting to be sad any day now, but she keeps on plugging along. But she's the *counts* ninth rat I've had (in pairs and triples), and dang they are awesome pets. Smart as a dumb dog and infinitely easier to take care of, but I'm considering taking a breather from them once Sunshine passes.)

I think so, don't hold me to that, I don't really use teru-k/ephemera's skintones much these days, I just recall thinking the purple recolour I had, didn't have a very child-like child state. Seams are a pain, I keep UV maps around for the bodies when I do skintones as I always end up having to get rid of some seam somewhere.
Oh that's cool :D Those cabinets are interesting to look at. Wiring?
Well yeah, buying them is not that expensive. I think I paid about 7 euros or so for a pillowcase, all sewn and ready to use and I think a meter or two of fabric is about the same (possibly less if you can find a cheap fabric that's decent quality). So really, buying the finished product is easier. The sewing option was more there for when I really couldn't find anything, I wanted a pillow in a nice and fresh spring green and it seemed all the stores I hit up at first weren't doing green (lot of aqua and purple and such).
Pardon, I said straw (which does exist as a ceiling material) but in this case it's reed. Reed and then this layer gets put on and it's smoothed out. What happens with these is, if you just randomly try to put a hole in it, that the reed doesn't always like that and you can get bigger holes than you were expecting. I had professionals put up our bedroom curtains and they used a special type of plug for putting the rails up (as normal plugs damage the ceiling). It's a pain in the butt really, but well, 100 year old apartment give or take, what can I say.
(aw, poor little rat. Well, as long as she's still happy. Rats always struck me as fun pets but I prefer gerbils. Not as intelligent maybe, but inquisitive, amusing the watch and adorable.. I had two, as you have to keep them atleast in pairs, and they were great. I miss em)

Yeah, I think I had a kid with one of her skintones, but being in the alien invasion game, all the clothes were kind of neck-high... I'll have a look one of these old days. And UV maps are an absolute GODSEND. I had to use one to figure out what was going wrong with my plantsim skin-- turns out one arm on the original skintone was too far over, so half the deco was cut off abruptly.
For electric lights! Which isn't super-period, but it gets dark in the back of that house. It's pretty deep. (We 'lost' a litter of kittens in there. They were playing, the people went to do something, and a little while later... no kittens. Mysterious! Distressing! We looked under all the furniture and regarded the dogs suspiciously. And then we found them all curled up in a fuzzy little heap in the dollhouse dining room. Harley still likes to think she can fit through the windows.)
You know, it strikes me kind of odd when it's cheaper to buy something than make something-- but I hear you on needing a very specific color. My office (computer room and workroom) is done up in shades of brown from sand to chocolate, and a deep true red. My computer armoire is red, I have one red throw pillow, and some red-heavy artwork... and that's it, because DAMN it is hard to find a red that matches everything. (Someday? CURTAINS.)
That's kind of awesome, though. I'm so used to drywall everywhere...
(Rats are the same way with needing to be social with other rats... but sometimes you end up with one lone old rat who's just too set in her ways to meet new baby cagemates.)
no subject
As I said, I'm not sure it's on all skintones, but I'd double-check anyway because I'm fairly certain they atleast did suffer from the clavicle of doom. And yeah, the uv maps, great. I find a lot of skintones have seams along the sides. And the UV map was especially handy when I was doing a servo skintone full of seams and rivets and such. I don't want to think about doing that without a uv map.
Aah, that makes sense. I kept wondering what kind of wiring you mean. And hey, you can always pretend the lights are... very powerful candles :P (like, actual life sized kittens? Wow. That gives me a whole different idea on the scale.. and also, that sounds totally adorable)
Well, uhm, I suppose fabrics are marked up for a single consumer as opposed to a factory. I mean, I take it a machine pumps out those pillow cases in bulk. Ooh, red and brown. That's a nice combo. I debated about using red as an accent myself, as my living room has brown furniture, white wall but with a light camel accent. But I liked green better, it's a bit more.. cheerful and fresh. Red's nice though, if you get the right shade.
The ceiling is plastered though, just like the walls, not like you can *see* the reed or anything. You can see old cracks in it though, and old seams where there used to be a set of double doors in the middle of the room with storage on either side. Ceiling's kinda ugly really, but I don't spend a lot of time looking at it. Oh old early 1900s apartments, there is some charm to them, but also a lot of headaches.
(yeah, I never got a new gerbil when one of my pair died either, because introducing a new gerbil to an old one, especially as in my case female gerbils, is not an easy task. Not impossible, but it takes a lot of split-cage method and such and with the age of the remaining gerbil it just wasn't worth it).
no subject
Most of 'em are shaped like candles, or like gas lamps. There aren't a whole lot of modern dollhouse... anythings. And yes, life-sized kittens, but they were an accidental litter and were pretty small at the time-- still nursing occasionally.
An industrial machine does the sewing, but there's still a person overseas manning it. It's a thing. My red is this... true cherry, I've always been a big fan of red, and I fell in love with the armoire so everything sort of had to work around that.
*chuckles* I believe it. I'm in California, the Quaker State, and you really have to have the foundation inspected if you think you want to buy a Victorian home around these parts.
(That's where Sunshine is. Also I know I'll neglect her if I get new busy babies-- I am easily distracted by the shiny, and babythings are always the shiny.)
no subject
Aah. No, I wouldn't imagine so. Hm, that'd be something though, a contemporary looking dollhouse.. or a dollhouse that's really historical, like, pre-medieval. And aw, kittens <3
Well, of course there's still a person XD But it's the bulk amounts that usually push down the price. That and probably "made in china" or something. I like the deep reds, the darker reds.. to an extent. As an accent colour more than something I want a lot of. I grew up stubbornly disliking red and it wasn't till later years that I conceded that red is a nice colour, given the right shade, and that hell I can even *wear* red (but not all reds)
Oh dear, that bad with the foundations? Foundation isn't a problem for us as it's a third floor apartment. But we do have the one straight under the roof, so there's that (flat roof too). The balcony is in especially bad shape and *needs* to be fixed, in fact a dude from the city council was over earlier in the week and said "that needs to be fixed". Although it's not *as* bad as the one attached to the apartment below us.. that one's actually got bits falling off >.>
(well it's only because baby rodents are cute fuzzy wuzzy little things )
